I found an 1878 Morgan dollar (philly mint) and it has an open "o" in the in god we trust... is this a sign of any particular VAM (is it a common thing?) I saw a VAM that had an open o and a tripled star on the front, but this does not have that... any help/ any points in the right direction would help

THANKS!

might have answered my own question.... I believe it also has a broken N and M in UNUM so I think it might be VAM-145 ... pics later

Most likely you have the VAM correct
AS the Open "O" and the broken OBV letters indicate only one VAM for these clues..Good work..

Hello DLEGGO, I would like to welcome you to this forum Family. I see my self in the questions you are asking, only years ago,I assure you, WE ALL started in the same position you are in, NEW and hungry for information. When I started out looking into Vams at the very beginning, I was NOT a forum member, Then I found this site, not long after and by simply asking questions the good people here helped make the understanding of the VAM topic a lot less painful.

I would mention to you if you are thinking about becoming serious about the "addicting" topic of Vams I would like to suggest some reading material that made my understanding, MUCH less painful, the Comprehensive Catalog and Encyclopedia of Morgan and Peace dollars, 4th edition authored by two people which the name "Vam' was derived.

The amazing people are Leroy C. Van Allen & A. George Mallis, George has passed, but by no means forgotten. By using some of the 1st letters from the both names the term " VAM" was born.

I had a much better understanding of everything from the people involved, the coining process, the actual procedures used and the stepping stone procedure to attribute Vams. I also found that there are steps broken down to assist you in finding, pin pointing & spotting the PUP'S, ( PICK-UP-POINTS )certain characteristics on a coin which help attribute the coin, or let you know if these pup's are not present, it is not the VAM you thought.
Certain "marks or gouges" letter doubling, etc, on a coin that look like the one you are searching for, We refer to as PUP'S that let you know certain pup's are eliminated from the search because they simply do not exist on your coin.

I hope I have helped and NOT made things worse by my statements, I wish you all the best and never be apprehensive about asking ANY questions, Have a blast, enjoy the site, There are some of the brightest, knowledgeable people here at this site, Be Well, Mike......
