I got the Lincoln today for $40, no worries about them selling them to someone else as they are holding them for me. Big debate though on that versus so coins for my 7070, they had a nice 1856 Seated Liberty quarter in VF, a 1891 Seated Liberty dime in XF, a 1857 Flying Eagle in VF that I wanted too plus I still need to get a Silver Eagle they had a nice 1986 one as well. I wonder if I can get them to hold those coins for me too.

I am almost thinking about saving up for a Trade dollar next instead of getting one or two coins a week. They had a 1877 Trade dollar in VF for $170 or a AU 1875S Trade dollar in AU but with 2 chop marks on the reverse for $205. I love both the coins I would have to see how distracting the chop marks are but I kind of like chop marks.

I do that too bouncing around from series to series with what I am currently working on at the moment. My only advise would be take the best deal. If the commems are going cheaper than they should take that, if theirs a good deal on a 7070 coin take that. You never know when a good deal will appear again, just do your homework for it and make sure it is actually a good deal thats hard to find before switching plans

And be careful on the trade $s. There are a ton of counterfeits on them. Make sure you know how to determine if they are authentic.

Yea the Trade dollars worry me a little, this is a great coin shop and they are really good but I would like to know what to look for counterfeit wise before even considering buying either of those dollars. I will definitely have my RedBook with me when I buy them and I will also want to do a lot of research on what too look for counterfeit wise before purchasing them.

The commems seem to be a good deal, numismedia had the Lincoln at $40 in MS67 which I am sure it is since its a proof I would think 68 or 69 looking at it which prices $43 to $51. Greysheet has it at $42. Heck it might even grade a 70 but I think I would put it at a 69 so I think it was a pretty good deal.

I am only really doing the two sets modern commemorative dollars and 7070 (I did start a sacagawea set and am missing 19 of those coins but they are only $2.50 a piece I could fill that album in one fowl swoop). So I like to one week buy for the one set and the next week buy for the other. Last week I got a 1853 Seated Liberty quarter with arrows and rays and a 1857-o Seated Liberty half dime for my 7070. This week I was going to do commemoratives. She priced the Library of Congress dollar at $50 and I think that is a little too high for that one even in 69 that only goes for $48 in MS which it was. She is also holding me a 2002 SLC Olympic and a Congress dollar as well. Plus I still have like a choice of 7 or 8 at the pawn shop (haven't been in awhile to see if they still have them but they weren't selling them last time I was in there). So I figure by the time I get through all those I will have a good 15-20 of the set (haven't even got the album yet nothing sucks more than an album that holds 65 coins and you have just 5 of them).

It takes a lot of patience to complete a set/series. With time and lots of money , you will get there.

LOL yea the set is 65 coins (I have 5) even buying one a week that is more than a year to get the rest plus the set will likely increase by 2 next year. Its fun to put together and since I am still in the infancy stage of putting the set together I have tons of options right now for coins to add. I am sure when you get to 40 or 50 it becomes more of a hunt.

It does get harder then, I'm doing a slabbed 70 set of them and some of them are going to be a nightmare trying to find them. The 2 a year is real nice since its easy to keep up with every year, the problem is getting caught up on the previous years lol

Yep I am 29 years behind haha, but once you get caught up its easy to stay caught up (part of the reason I liked doing a sacagawea set).

I have a problem with buying as they come out. If you notice the drop from issue price after a year or two is a pretty big savings. The problem is finding them. My attitude might change once I get caught up. Right now I have enough to buy that I don't have to worry about only 2 per year.

Thats a fair point. Sometimes they do go up sometimes they go down. They are often cheaper for the dollars at least on the after market since they dont have the charity fee tacked on.

Yea but I won't have to worry about buying them the year of at least until 2014 if not 2015. I don't know if I have ever ordered from the mint itself.

The prices look fair for the most part. Buy the ones you like and want to add to your collection.
I know the ones I would pick, but you need to buy what you like.
That way later on you wont be as apt to have buyers remorse set in.
I myself like all the older classic Half designs and very few or the moder ones are not liked also.
I have been working on a set of classic commems and modern ones for years, I doubt I will ever get them all.
On modern ones I just buy them from the mint, on older ones the hunt is on, I like the hunt best of all.

When I am done with my modern commemorative dollar set I want to start into a classic half dollar set. I actually think I will end up with a few of my favorites long before then like Oregon Trail, Stone Mountain and Lexington Concord.

Lexington was the coin that started my commemorative sets. Really a fantastic coin
