Thanks for the input guys. Yes I will check on the RedBook and Coin World catalog,w smoker, sounds like a good idea to me aswell. Also Ninamason thanks for the input I will def. check on the ebay seller you mention, that sounds like a great starting price on mercury's. I've been trying to find a good, reliable, fair seller there. Thank you all so much for the suggestions!

Well if you got the time go to your local bank and do roll searching for nickels. I managed to find 5 or 6 silver War Nickels in a period of like a few months. You can find lots of other early date nickels as well and just about complete a full set this way. Yes there are hard dates to find in Jeffersons but have some fun. Tons of posts in here about roll searching.

I also agree with buying silver coins like merc's and the Buffalo nickles are fun to search for at a good price. Good luck!

If you stumble upon a few proof, silver dimes and quarters you might buy one of each.
They can be had for just a slight premium above melt, and you will have nice looking coins to boot.
A $10 budget? A half dozen proof cents and nickels - EASY!

I collect coins on a budget also. I had no idea on what to collect or where to begin so I went to Barnes and Nobles, and Books a Million and bought alot of the Harris Folders of all types of coins, I bought the twenith century album, and then the common books, Lincoln cents, Roosevelt dimes, etc.. Then I went home and started filling holes. I did that about 13 months ago and I would say I have filled almost all those holes threw ciculation coins.

Nice! Yeah I need to make a trip to books a million and get the dime folders, right now I've got them in a ziploc until I can get the folder. About how much do the folders run?

With BadThad, when I was young I just wanted to fill holes with what ever I could find. After now 40 years of this lifetime addiction I find myself replacing many of my coins I had bought with the previous mentality. I now focus on eye appeal and coins with great detail.

If you wanted to collect something other than dimes, I would think 40% Silver Kennedy's (1965-1970) could be had for less than $10. That would make a fun short set, and you could save up a little extra and get the 90% ones (1964 and 64-D)

Yes I agree, I love super shiny. So quality is nice.. although I would not turn down a dull coin. I have a love for the antiquity of the coin. And if that word is not used right, what I mean is I just love old coins! :D The JFK coins sound nice to collect as well. I have a few of the more new coins, meaning (90's). But again I like to collect coins with silver content, So I may get a set of the 60's JFK started! Thanks for the suggestions you guys! I am really surprised at the feedback coming from this forum. It seems like a great place to be a part of!

Knowledge is an absolute requirement if you are going to make collecting a lifetime hobby. It's just too easy to make mistakes (costly mistakes) which could dampen your enthusiasm. I also suggest any collector should sell coins occasionally to test the assumed values on the type of coins you're collecting. If you can easily sell at 85%-90% of what you bought at recently, your doing well... dealers appropriate have some mark-up. Over time hopefully the values will increase. Avoid trends and promotions. Most importantly, have fun.

My suggestion is to stop now. Do not continue collecting coins. To many collectors out there already. How can I get all the coins I want if people continue to become coin collectors.
On a serious note.
1. Do buy the Red Book
2. Do not mess with ebay until you really know what your doing
3. Attempt to find coin shows
4. Go to coin stores but be carefull. Usually the prices are excessive
5. Check out flea markets for coin dealers or anyone selling coins
6. My favorite is garage/yard/estate sales.

Thanks guys I value the veteran advice. Also I have yet to go to any estate sells. How does that work really? I've heard things get quite expensive at those?
Rest in Peace

Estate sales/ auctions can be hit or miss. If there are people bidding on coins that do not have a clue the hammer prices can be excessive. Knowledge is your key to collecting success.
