All of our coins need new designs. Each of the designs on each denomination have been on for longer than any other design in the history of our nation. I say re-design them all.

The new designs, if they eventuate, have to look obviously American. That can be hard, if the designs stray too far from the traditional.

Which brings me to a question:
What symbolism that has not been shown on the definitive coinage so far, would you suggest for the new designs?

I can think of a few: Grizzly bear, Brooklyn bridge, Statue of Liberty, a famous American, map, Scales of Justice, flag, symbols of Industry or Commerce, etc.

The elements of any design would already have to be recognised as distinctively American, by non American people across the Planet.

I would say don't spend the money at this time to redesign any coins.

That being said, I would love to see the Walking Liberty design come back to the half dollar, as well as the Mercury design to the dime. I'm not too impressed with some of the newer designs (Pres. & Nickels), and I tend to think they would probably foul up any fully new coin design.

I don't have much confidence in he Mint at present to come up with decent designs. That said, I would like to see our coinage revert to classic designs. I would like to see lady liberty or perhaps even lady justice grace our coinage. Stick to eagles for reverses. In fact they make 'em all eagles (different designs.) No more Presidents. No more monuments.

Would love some redesigns of some of the coinage. But one thing they need to do (which I am sure they won't) is a 100 yr Commemmerative yr set of one of the greatest years IMO for coins ever 1916. Lincoln Wheat, Buffalo nickel, Mercury dime, Standing Liberty quarter, and Walking Liberty half.

I agree. A 100 Year Commemorative set in 2016 is very appealing.

Why does Congress think we have to keep presidents on our coins? I don't think the dead presidents will care if they are removed from coins. I would love to see all of the coin designs changed, especially the dime and half dollar. Neither of these designs have been modified since they started (obverse or reverse). That is waaay too long. Although I really like the Mercury dime and Walking Liberty half designs, I think new designs can be created. There is no need to reuse old designs. I like the idea of using Justice or Liberty on the coins, or at least some of them.

Maybe not these specific images, but there is 'ol lady justice who could be used interestingly, I thnk. Also, I have always loved that Eagle image, especially on a round itm. It adorns my custom poker chip sets. I would love the Mint to start thinking a bit outside their tiny, ugly box. I prefer classical a look, but would be open to something else so long as it has class.

The congressmen that share political affiliation with those depicted on the coins would definitely care if the issue were brought to the floor.

As much as I love the Lincoln Cent, it was the biggest mistake in our coinage history; setting the precedent for what we have today.

Interesting thoughts here from everyone. I would like to see both the dime and half dollar design changed.

I would be in favor of a design overhaul for almost all circulating US coinage. The nickel obverse bust of Jefferson is simply hideous. The dime would benefit from an overhaul as it has been around for 67 years (as of 2012). The commemorative-mentality quarter dollars are an abomination, as are the Presidential dollars. The half dollar, while classically designed on the reverse, could use a rehaul and facelift away from the "dead presidents" motif. I would absolutely LOVE to see the US coinage revert to classic liberty and other designs of 1916 come the year 2016! That would be simply stunning!

I tend to agree with a redesign of the half dollar a waste of time.

However, Mercury dimes were my first love. I've always said that dimes were my favorite, but I have to admit I sold off my mercury collection when silver went through the roof. Hey, none of them were numismatic... so I took the money and purchased coins that were.

I also am partial to the Seated dimes. I love dimes. Yes, it is time for a redesign of our 10 cent piece. I would like to see a Mercury redesign.

I also agree that the mint can't be trusted enough to be allowed a single redesign. So, a big part of me wants to say that the mint shouldn't do a darn thing. In my opinion, the quarters program and Presidential dollars programs were kind of a joke.

I like the shield also. At least it has something to do with what Lincoln stood for...preservation of the Union...Quarters have never interested me but I do think the design is old and could use a revamp. Like alot of you here I think we should go back to representations of liberty and let "sleeping dogs"...dead prezs. lie...
