I was curious, do many of you collect the pre 1982 copper cents? If you do and are selling them for the copper value, where are you selling them?

Thanks

Brent

Lots of people collect those. Some are known as hoarders of just Copper. Others take them to smelters where they are given Copper prices for them. Some actually use them in Albums and Folders as collectors.

just carl. why would smelters buy them ? They're illegal to melt and probably will be for a while.

I collect them, hoard them, fill albums, coin tubes, etc. with LMC's. You can find them for sale on E-bay, not the greatest margins but some people are into it. I guess the cheapest way to ship them is usually USPS.

Approx 150 copper cents per pound.

2500 / 150 = 16.7 pounds (roughly)

Pman - if you stock of them gets so big that you move them to the attic, I hope you have good strong studs up there or they may fall through and kill you and your wife won't have to.

I hoard them also, but mine are in the basement so they can't hurt me.

I started out as a copper hoarder a little over 1 year ago and initially didnt pay attention to all the cool varieties and errors of lincoln cents. Now I am more interested in finding the cool varieties/errors and wheats, but I am still hoarding the copper. I am at about 650 lbs.

Meh.....I move a lot so I don't get the luxury of hoarding so I just trade them in for face value

When you just separate them from your change it you don't even notice the pennies. They don't cost much to get and you don't miss it. But over the years it does add up. I have been separating them in my change for probably 20 years and occasionally I will get rolls. I think I have about 300 lbs. I don't plan to cash them in until it is legal to do so. When I do cash them in, I probably will use the money to buy another coin. It is more fun that way.
