My 11 year old daughter and I went through our first 6 rolls of cents today. One 58-D wheat and countless LMCs that she deemed "shiny enough" for her brand new Lincoln folders. Those, along with her hunting through all my "extra' Wheats, got her a very good start to her collection. Oh, by the way, the couple of hours we spent doing it was the the highlight of my my weekend. I think she's hooked.

I'm new to coin roll hunting. Started a couple weeks when I inherited a coin collection. I started because a price guide I rented out at the library had a chapter on where to find coins. They suggested going to the bank and going through rolls. The chapter also stated that half dollars were the best bet because they were not really circulated like other denominations and also from 65' to 70', they still were made of 40% silver, which I didn't know(I thought only coins pre 65' were only made of silver).
Anyways, I went to a branch of my bank and ask for 10 rolls of quarters, dimes and half dollars of each. They had no problem giving me the dimes and quarters but they didn't any half dollars. So I went to 2 other of my bank branches and finally one had two rolls. So I went home and found no luck with the quarters and dimes, but I found a 40% silver half(1967). I thought there might be something with this. So I went downtown to the main branch of mine bank and where the main vault is, I bought 15 rolls of half dollars. I went back to my car and unwrapped them. I found 8 40% halfs. I went back in and ask for a 100 rolls but they only could give me 25. They said if I wanted more than I would have to order them. So I ordered another 100 rolls and they said it would come in two days from now. I went back to my car and unwrapped them and only found 4 40% halfs, but also found 1 64' and 1 62' Franklin. I couldn't believe that I was actually finding silver coins searching through rolls.
So anyways, I went back to my hometown the next day and called around to some banks for half dollars and found that the bank my dad has a account had 160 rolls. I went down there with my dad and ask for all of them but they said they only would give me 50 rolls and it would cost me $4 to buy them. I wasnt too happy about that but went ahead and agreed. My dad and I spent the next hour going through them and only found 1 40% half. I was very dissappointed. So when I got back in town, I started to call around to the main branches of banks to find if they had any half dollars and found a small bank that had some. I went down there and only purchased 2 rolls, because it wasn't my bank. Anyways, they were manual wraped. I went through the two rolls when I went back to my car and found 1 40% half. I went back in and ask for all they had. They came back with 20 rolls in a box and they were manual wrapped. I went back into my car and started to unwrapped the first one. When I went through the roll I noticed they were all 40% halfs. Not one wasn't a copperclad. I looked on the wrapper and someone had wrote 60s copper. Needless to say I went home and unwrapped all 20 rolls and this is what I found.

- 185 40% halfs
- 1 90% Kennedy

So I'm hooked on coin roll hunting.

My first double (in about 20 rolls of Lincolns)! I found a 1934 and a 1954-S. And as a bonus, in the same roll, I found a plastic toy penny.

Well I have been into CRH since Christmas of 2008. Since then have found 6 silver dimes in rolled stuff I buy each week at my local Credit Union and have gotten them to order me two boxes of halves every two weeks... Box 1, 2, 3 got only one 1991 Proof coin, but had a nice surprise when I found 27 40% silver in box #4. So I'm hooked now....

Ric-san- Nice silver hoard find! Roll hunting certainly is addictive. My best advice is to not discouraged if you hit a lull with regard to silver and other notable finds. I find that just when I'm feeling discouraged that I crack a roll of nickles that turns out to actually be filled with british pound coins (which has happened to me a few times).

I have been going through about a box or two of nickels each week. Each box contains 50 rolls and I've found at least 1 War Nickel or 1 Buffalo nickel in each box. I have also found both a 1938s & 1939s that were VF+. I actually was able to replace the 38s & 39S nickels in my Dansco album with them.

I've tried a box or two of pennies but the nickels to me are just a lot more fun. I'll start posting some pics of the nickels I'm finding.

I can't afford to buy boxes at the current time, but I do buy 2 rolls of nickels, 2 rolls of cents, and one roll of dimes every friday. I get the occasional Wheat cent and infrequent Buffalo nickels. Nothing outstanding to date.

I roll hunted when I lived in the US and would still do if I was still there.

They don't do coin rolls in the UK....the just put coins in small plastic bags but I still get some from time to time to look thru.

I find that a high percentage of coins in the UK are rather beat up when you look thru bags.

Oh well...but it is still fun to look.

I am new to Coin Roll Hunting and find lots of U.S. coins. I was wondering which coins are worth keeping in each denomination. Appreciate any tips and info, thanks. Received an email from a member on here, thanks.

Howdy all, finally got some MORE good results in my quest for the Silver...
This week I got my boxes of halves latter in the day because of the honey -do list and taking out the Mrs into town... BUT, it was well worth the wait...This week, I got a total of (64) SILVER halves; of which (8) were 90% silver and (56) were 40% silver. Found some interesting coins... (2) Ben Franklin's, a 1949 & 1952. Found a 1987p, 2003p and 2008d all mint only releases for collectors. Also I have what I believe is a 1974 double die half in avg condition (off to the dealer for verification) and the (in)famous double reverse novelty half...(what a heart breaker...!!). So that's my story, and I'm stickin' to it...Thanks for lookin'

1974 D & 1995 P Double Die Half Dollars CONFIRMED
Well it only took me to go threw around 7,900 halves in the last month of coin roll hunting to hit first major pay-dirt...besides the 91 silver halves found so far.... So we are looking for the good stuff and I put all 1974's aside for an 'extra' look-see and Brandon (future son in law) and I found this well circulated coin. Used a trusty 30x loop, but we weren't sure if it was the real deal. So since I'm working days, he took it over to the new local coin dealer in town who verified it and according to him in this condition it is still worth between $100-150. (Belated happy dance once I found out after coming home). The dealer confirmed it was a what appears to be a 1995 P double die also. They (I found 2 of these coins) and the are in EF40- AU50 grade and in his own words, "I might be sitting on a goldmine." So its off to find a copy of the Cherry-pickers Guide to further research these coins also. ...Thanks for lookin'

I never did this before I started with this forum. In fact I didn't know it existed. Now every time I stop at the bank I buy a roll or two of pennies, nickels or dimes. Today I bought a couple of rolls of circulated Lincoln cents. Found a couple of 1960's and a 1959, but nothing special. Since I'm new at this I don't expect to hit the jackpot right away, but if I keep up with it I'm sure it will happen sometime. (I HOPE it will happen sometime!)

Yeah, the key to roll hunting is quantity since you don't know quality in advance. I usually go through 2,000 halves a week.

Has anyone had a problem with ordering fed boxes and then when you get them, they have been opened and sealed back up with clear tape on the end? I just got a box like that. All the rolls look like the ones I have been getting, but no silver is showing on the ends of any of the rolls. Is it possible to request sealed boxes and reject any boxes that have been opened and re-sealed without pissing the bank off.
