I'm new to coin roll hunting. Started a couple weeks when I inherited a coin collection. I started because a price guide I rented out at the library had a chapter on where to find coins. They suggested going to the bank and going through rolls. The chapter also stated that half dollars were the best bet because they were not really circulated like other denominations and also from 65' to 70', they still were made of 40% silver, which I didn't know(I thought only coins pre 65' were only made of silver).
Anyways, I went to a branch of my bank and ask for 10 rolls of quarters, dimes and half dollars of each. They had no problem giving me the dimes and quarters but they didn't any half dollars. So I went to 2 other of my bank branches and finally one had two rolls. So I went home and found no luck with the quarters and dimes, but I found a 40% silver half(1967). I thought there might be something with this. So I went downtown to the main branch of mine bank and where the main vault is, I bought 15 rolls of half dollars. I went back to my car and unwrapped them. I found 8 40% halfs. I went back in and ask for a 100 rolls but they only could give me 25. They said if I wanted more than I would have to order them. So I ordered another 100 rolls and they said it would come in two days from now. I went back to my car and unwrapped them and only found 4 40% halfs, but also found 1 64' and 1 62' Franklin. I couldn't believe that I was actually finding silver coins searching through rolls.
So anyways, I went back to my hometown the next day and called around to some banks for half dollars and found that the bank my dad has a account had 160 rolls. I went down there with my dad and ask for all of them but they said they only would give me 50 rolls and it would cost me $4 to buy them. I wasnt too happy about that but went ahead and agreed. My dad and I spent the next hour going through them and only found 1 40% half. I was very dissappointed. So when I got back in town, I started to call around to the main branches of banks to find if they had any half dollars and found a small bank that had some. I went down there and only purchased 2 rolls, because it wasn't my bank. Anyways, they were manual wraped. I went through the two rolls when I went back to my car and found 1 40% half. I went back in and ask for all they had. They came back with 20 rolls in a box and they were manual wrapped. I went back into my car and started to unwrapped the first one. When I went through the roll I noticed they were all 40% halfs. Not one wasn't a copperclad. I looked on the wrapper and someone had wrote 60s copper. Needless to say I went home and unwrapped all 20 rolls and this is what I found.
- 185 40% halfs
- 1 90% Kennedy
So I'm hooked on coin roll hunting.
