It's not a bullion coin. If it were it would sell for $975. Because people paid $1,240 for it, even if gold drops a couple hundred of dollars, I doubt many would sell for less than their purchase price.

howell1018.. I believe you are correct in the short run... But people being people will have gotten caught up in this because of all the publicity, and in a year or two, they will be selling these at pawn shops and LCS.

There's no doubt some will eventually end up in LCS and pawn shops like every other coin. If you ever find proof gold from the U.S. Mint for melt then buy it because there are always buyers who pay premiums for it. These are priced almost exactly like other U.S. gold proofs, the premiums are nearly identical percentage-wise and on the same grid.

I have recently picked up Commemorative $5.00 modern proofs, not AGE's, at just above spot.

Here is my musing: I hope their next version of a gold half dollar is a specimen quality (not Proof) gold Walking Liberty half dollar, with full mint lustre.

I was just using that link to further the point that these more common modern gold coins do sell like bullion in many cases.

I just got my 8/25/14 issue of Coin World that has a front page article on the gold Kennedys. This article has led me make several new conjectures based on sales figures for THE FIRST THREE DAYS. Sales for the first three days only approximate 180,000 with very close to 60,000 sold each of the first three days. I find this surprising as I would think there would be a drop off. Perhaps the stories of the mint suspending sales at the ANA show drove some of those sales. I'm still of the belief that these will not drop below the issue price, but I can't see a huge appreciation without a large increase in the price of gold. Secondly, something I perhaps don't understand, the article states that the West Point mint is striking 6,000 coins a week and anticipates having struck 75,000 by Oct 1st. With 180,000 already sold that would leave them 105,000 short which would require an additional 17+ weeks to catch up to the amount sold in just the first 3 days which would put them into early March already and this discounts the amount that has been sold in the ensuing 12 days. Looks like those who ordered at the tail end of August 7th (day 3) are going to be waiting 7 months. I have to guess that the quick sellout of the HOF coins left many disappointed who were determined not to be shutout this time. From a sales standpoint, this has to be viewed as a major success by the people at the mint and I would assume many similar issuances will be in the offing in future years. This probably should be another topic, and frankly I'm surprised this hasn't been brought up by others (maybe it has) but 2015 would be the centennial of the issuance of the Pan-Pacific $50 gold pieces. Surely a 2 coin reissue of those would be wildly popular (I'd get one). I think those coins initially had over 2 ounces of gold each times two would be an investment over $5k.

I ordered mine and on back order with every one else. My reasons being that I do believe it will be a key coin and is an integral part of the series. Also I collect commemoratives and that is a part of the series; hopefully I have both ends covered. If I live long enough I will see that I made a good choice.

Howell1018, I believe the Gold Kennedy half sales figures are substantially less than that. As of yesterday morning, the figures were as follows: Kennedy Gold 63,521 +1,180. Since the strong first day sales, which were followed by many, many returns, sales have been about 1,000 per week. The mint spokesman stated they have an existing blank capacity for 75,000 units with a first mintage of 40,000 having already been struck and a subsequent weekly capability to produce 6,000 units. Based on current sales trend (and severely week e-bay resales figures!), they should be able to meet demand quite easily. I received my 2 coins which I ordered at 1:04 on opening day this afternoon from UPS. Couldn't be happier. Even though they qualify for first strike, I am opting to keep them in the OGP. And kudos to the Mint for having enough product and quickly shipping it to avoid a repeat of the BHOF fiasco.

I read MNB regularly and have found it very informative. That being said, CCF is my home base!

The 60k figure certainly seems more plausible. Maybe I misread the Coin World article. According to the mint, I ordered the coin at 1:13, and I also received mine yesterday. Coin looks flawless to me. Debating as to whether or not to have it slabbed. I won't be selling it for years, by which time I don't think the presence of a first release sticker will matter. For those who care about such matters, I thought the packaging was some of the nicest, if not the nicest I've ever seen.
