There is also a Russian coin with a similar image. Does St. George also have a patron saint type status in Romania and Russia like he does in England? Report this Post to the Staff
Sap Moderator Australia 16873 Posts	Posted 02/06/2008 08:02 am While Saint George is indeed a widely revered saint, especially in the Slavic lands, this coin in fact shows the Madara Rider, an early mediaeval cliff-side sculpture dating back to the earliest history of the Bulgarian people. The rider is believed to be a depiction of an early Bulgar ruler, Khan Tervel. The Madara Rider appears on many of the post-Communist circulating coinage denominations, and on a couple of pre-WWII coins as well.
