Quote: I'm sure back in 1967, someone was saying the same about the centennial set and in time love will be written about these coins.
I was around in 1967 and I don't recall anything bad said about the centennial coins. Everyone seem to like them.
I was pretty young back then back but I liked all the wildlife on the coins. After all, all kids can relate to animals.
For adults back in 1967, Alex Colville was a well know artist, so I doubt the same concern would have been raised for those coins.
This set will be like the 125th Anniversary of Canada set. No one will be remember it 10 years from now, let alone 50 years from now. Contemporary art never is popular on coins and I don't see why this set will be anything different.
Why RCM will bother with contest and all the related stuff, when it possible all the people's designs directly to trash and "select" by virtual voting already pre-approved designs by hired artist, just signed by non-exist people....so less troubles.
Quote: I am cancelling my $229.95 order for this set.
The coins still "must have" for us. One year edition, hopefully. I believe, they will do additional sets from the base metal with 2017 coins - will be more worth for the price, imo.
This is what happens when you let the general public vote. You get "Boatie McBoatface" or Donald J. Trump. Silly democracy!
Seriously, they are not that bad but as collector coins, they will be like 1992, 1999, 2000 and really even 1967. If you want something rare and potentially a good buy, look for the classic designs which will be available only in special sets in 2017.
Quote: Anyone notice the laser Anti-Counterfeiting engraving on the Tooney and the Looney? Silver Proof sets don't normally have those, is that a mistake (not a Mint's first ), or this is the first time they added it to Silver Proof set (another Mint's first)?
I emailed the Mint and they replied saying there will be no Laser Anti-Counterfeiting engraving on the Toonie and Loonie, and they have just updated the images on the website.
Royal Canadian Mint presents the coin struck by Polish Mint, for Republic of Cameroon, while the coin commemorates the railroad across Russia to China.
Looks beautiful but at $1200 CDN for a 7oz "coin" too expensive for me.
Just got email from rep for 2 oz Silver Maple commemerating Canada's 150. Has special features which sound cool. Mintage 6,000 at $170 and it's a first.
Quote: Just got email from rep for 20z Silver Maple commemerating Canada's 150. Has special features which sound cool. Mintage 6,000 at $170 and it's a first.
Thanks for update. I assume, that it similar to the recent gold one.
Is it Proof (traditional Proof - frosting on the mirror surface)?
With the mintage of 6000, I do not think, it will be rare / popular. All previous RCM NCLT Maples haven't been gratefully received by collectors: "2013 Piedford" "2013 25-th Anniversary" 2014, 2015, 2016 Premium version of SML with / without Privy...
with the issue price of CAD 170 it has "room" for later discounts till $100-$120.
It's a 50mm 2oz SML 'replica'. I really wish the Mint would stop using that term due to the obvious confusion in the marketplace that it's a copy rather than being authentic.
The special features appear to be micro etching of small maple leaves and '150' on the reverse surrounding a tradition SML leaf. There is also some sort of 'light diffracting wave pattern' that changes the look as you move the coin.
Due to this, people usually say, that they don't understand, why RCM charges near to CAD 80 for 1oz Bullion SML replica coin. If it Replica - it is still bullion.
So, anyway, 2 oz SML hits the ebay. BIN price CAD 199 with Free Shipping. To get at Mario store.
If we crossing here bullion world, just got mail from APMEX with alert of Silver continuously goes down, and already below USD 17 per 1oz , and:
2017 QB "The Griffin" coin is out. Amazing one, imo. Same level as "The Lion". Hopefully TCS will have them and hopefully with capsules.
