NO Wells Fargo cash box, but did find a 1964 d Lincoln. The wind was blowing strong, very unusual for here, so only about an hour of searching.

Sounds like fun! I need to pick a metal detector up one of these days!!
@bmar When you get tired of searching around Libby, come down here and throw your detector on my property. I would love to know what is buried here and will grant you permission. I live on the old Native American "Trail to the Buffalo" as they call it. So who knows what could be under there.

When the signs first started showing up on hwy 200, we thought they would lead to the National Bison Range. When the snow clears out of the mountains, I want to go back up the the fire lookouts and see what I can find. I have been to most of the lookouts around here and some are quite a hike, so I doubt many have searched these areas.

For a second I thought you had found a ring. I guess you did. It is a ring pull. Oh well. Better luck next time. I don't know about that Wells Fargo cash box, but I understand that there's a bucket of gold at the end of a rainbow.

Went out on the Kootenai River where and old road was cut thought around the beginning of the last century. The new road is down along the railroad tracks. The old road was used mostly by model T era cars and some wagons. We didn't find much but a few small car parts and nails. We did see some ospreys and great views of the Kootenai river.
Yesterday was the Fawn Creek campground area where they hold the muzzle loader/mountain man rendezvous. There were whitetail deer all over enjoying the first grass of spring. Saw about eight heron, all grouped together for some reason, where the Fisher river runs into the Kootenai river just a few miles below the Libby dam. Not having much luck with the metal detecting, but it is sure nice to be outside after one long and hard winter.

Sounds like a perfect day -- except for not finding a jar of Morgan dollars. Still, fresh air, exercise, and some critters in the wild, sounds pretty good to me.

I would have been happy with a few Lincolns and a Jefferson or two, but still had a good time. Tomorrow might be an old homestead on the banks of the Kootenai a few miles upriver of the falls and swinging bridge.

I took the metal detector out in the yard today and only found a few metal items. Nothing new there. So I tried a coin (a quarter) that I buried about three inches deep. Even though I knew where the coin was at, I had a hard time telling it was there with the metal detector. I had to move slow and press the search coil on the ground. There would be a slight blip and nothing more. By the time I had the settings at the "slight blip" I would get blips all over the yard. I have read were many people have had good luck with this detector, so I will keep working with it and see what I am doing wrong.

I've heard that detectorists always practice with their own coins first. Clearly it's a good idea.
It's odd that you should be able to easily find a ring pull but not a quarter.

I didn't get a chance to try any other settings today with all the rain we had. I have read were some tests are done with the coin under a book. The rechargeable batteries came today and are charging, so I will try again tomorrow with fresh batteries.

The rechargeable batteries came today and I tried them in the detector and had no problem with detecting a quarter under a book, but the other detector had no problem either. I spent the day moving beehives and setting up nucs and such, so no time to go looking for coins. Maybe tomorrow.

Went out in the yard today and found a bunch of cast iron fragments and such. Not to surprising because the log house that once stood here was built in the 1890's or so. I did find my Two Cents worth, both memorial Lincolns, a 1974d and the other I can't tell. So I am up to three pennies now
