Hey everyone, I have been looking to get a large cent for a while now, and stumbled on this example. Never owned one or seen one in person, so I am hesitating. I'm not looking for a key date or anything, I just want a decent example. Do you see any corrosion or problems on this one? I'm thinking this grades G6, the seller is claiming VG and wants $175. Thanks!

You may be right about G6 overall although I wouldn't go above 4 for the obverse. This looks like it might be an S-175. One site I use for large coppers says this: "This variety has a neat Die Cud at the letter "U" in UNITED on the reverse, plus it's a scarce variety (R3). The reverse Cud is all that's needed to positively attribute this coin as a 1798 S-175. It also has a noticeable crack from the bottom right of "A" in STATES to the top left leaf." Looks like the die crack is there but worn, and of course the Cud is pretty obvious.

I think G4-6. $175 is very pricey for this example I wouldnt pay more than $100. Keep looking you will find a nicer example. IMO

G6 Planchet granularity. $100 seems about right.

Great-thanks for all the info! Alot of the large cents I've seen online look to be in worse shape, or cost way more. This is proving to be one tough hole to fill.

Agree with the majority. If you're looking for a type example, extreme patience will yield a better example at a lesser price. Nice reverse though. When I was looking for mine at around a $80-$120 price point, I found I had to make a conscious trade off between obverse and reverse conditions in my budget range.

I'd grade this borderline AG-3/G-4, the obverse is really worn out but the reverse is better. I'd say $80 if you really want the coin, less if you don't. I doubt the seller will compromise if they're asking that much.

jessvc1: That helps put things into perspective. I see the G4 coin has a fully visible date; whereas this coin does not.
Thanks everyone

If you're just looking for a large cent, I wouldn't choose a slightly scarcer variety for a type coin. This one is R3... For $100, you should be able to pick up a nicer draped bust - even if you want a pre-1800. And yes, this coin is corroded, but not terribly for the grade.
I'd say keep looking.
Oh, and $175 is a bit steep.
