Macmerc...you have some great mercs! What would you say the average grade is in your book? My goal is to complete mine with xf+. I'm tryin to do it as close to silver price as possible. I have one complete set(-2 key dates) of very circulated coins, but decided to start a new one with xf+ instead of finishing the other. Just hope it turns out like yours.

XF is very difficult for some of the pre-1934 branch mint coins, I've discovered to my despair. I'm trying to do XF for 1916-1931 and AU/BU for 1934-1945. It's not so much the cost (well, the cost of a '16-D in XF is truly prohibitive for me, so I don't anticipate having that date in that grade), as I am willing to spend years on the project, but that finding acceptable XF coins is just very hard, regardless of the cost. And I'm not being really strict about XF really, I'm happy with some VF30 or VF35 coins in some cases.
In some cases, it almost seems like MS coins are more available than XF coins, though incredibly expensive. I guess silver just wears so fast that they don't stay in that XF window that long.
In retrospect, I would have set my ambition to VF instead. That's still pretty challenging for several dates, but not hair raising. But now I have so many XF and AU coins, I don't want to start downgrading mid-stream.

Speaking of hard dates in XF... I have some coming in the mail. I need every Mercury dime collector to cross their fingers and send their best vibes out that I won't have to send them back because of an undisclosed cleaning or other nonsense. There's one date that's been my nemesis, and hopefully I'll be able to stop whining about it.

I think the Captain says it all, I don't know my average grades as of the moment, but rather I would like my Dansco album be fill with some more AU coins in the first page.
This is what I am aiming for in term of the grades, but a AU-50 1916-D is around $7-8K, forget the Numismedia prices when it goes to AU with FB, that's not realistic if I can find one with the right price. I think all S and D mint are keys from 1918-1931 in AU grades, that's just my opinion. Too many AU grade coins probably went to the melter.

It's only halftime, but this thread is already better than the superbowl! Here's my take on the highlights from the first half (1916-1931)! We've got complete sets so far from Fuzzy 317, Moe145 and Wornslick GR58, cipster and upstate are only missing the big boy 1916-D We've got every date from jeffrose except the 1921 pair Macmercury, what are you doing? You've got everything except 1917-D? There were a lot of beautiful 1916 dimes, as we should expect for that date. I pick VACookey's 1916-P blazer, yotie's toned 1916-P, biokemist6's amazing BLUE 1916-P, mysilveryear's flashy FB 1916-S and macmercury's killer '16-D as my favorites for that date! Rayman311's toned 1917 from nolawyer is gorgeous, as was GR58's dusky toned, super-sharp 1920. Muddler's high grade '21 and '21-D saved from the melt tubs stole the show for those key dates! Macmercury had an amazing FB 1923, and a very pretty 1923-S - a very tough date in high grades. His 1926-S redlines (greenlines?) my envy meter; that date is super hard to find that nice. My socks were also knocked off by his 1927, 1928, 1928 large S and his blazing 1930. AWESOME COINS EVERYONE!

@Captain: After searching over my inventory for the 17-D and notice it was sold, I bought one on ebay within the last two weeks. I have been taken some pictures, but really have a heck of time getting good images from PCGS slab coin. I will upload that into the 17-D section tomorrow along with the 1938 section.

@Captain and @Macmerc, thanks a lot for that input. It's much appreciated. Mercs are my newest endeavor and I've still got a ton to learn about them. It's funny that Captain mentioned some of the early mercs are very pricy for xf. Found that out the hard way at the coin shop today when I was looking to buy a few. Lets just say I passed on them for a while. As for the key dates, I knew they'd cost a fortune for xf. I'd be happy just having them period. Like I said, I still have a great deal to learn. My coin collecting has taken a more serious turn this past year and I appreciate your help.
