I'm getting extremely frustrated because I am having problems telling whether a coin is problem free or not. I'm thinking it would be helpful for me to go over ebay for the next few days, post pictures and ask you guys what you think. I am having problems with the dipping/retoning thing. I dont see hairlines from cleaning, but cant distinguish the difference between natural and unnatural toning. Here is a link to a dime, I dont see hairlines but the surfaces just look weird http://www.ebay.com/itm/18084019759....m1423.l2649Here is a link to a half. What are the small holelike things on each side of her head? Why the heck is the "N" in "UNITED" on the rev. so chunky? It's not a var. http://www.ebay.com/itm/15076202455....m1423.l2649Another half, this time obviously cleaned harshly on the front, but only small fields of hairlines are seen on the rev., has most of rev. retoned? http://www.ebay.com/itm/1862-S-Seat...em416369d060another half.. the eagle on the rev looks too shiny, yet the motto is barely readable. cleaned? http://www.ebay.com/itm/1876S-SEATE...em256dee73d3And finally, one that appeals to me. This coin appears to have natural toning which I like.. but AGAIN, it looks CLEANED.It is in pcgs problem free slab, but I see hairlines on the left of the coin near libertys right arm, and I see them on rev. on the left side near the eagles neck and under the eagles wing. http://www.ebay.com/itm/28083880949....m1423.l2649 I'm trying to put together a seated liberty half set, but I want original coins.. How can I tell if a coin has been dipped/has artifical toning Edited by Amputating 03/18/2012 7:23 pm

I've seen harshly cleaned coins in PCGS holders. You'd be surprised what PCGS will certify and the problem free coins that don't make it in their holders. If this original, I'll eat my shorts. https://goccf.com/t/110207

So many coins were cleaned and even encouraged to be cleaned in the early 20th century that most have been. I really enjoy Seated halves and have found most of my examples turn out to be cleaned. To me I now just focus on eye appeal and does it meet my grade standards. Such as: 1873 arrows And it comes back And then there is this one 1869 proof And this is how it grades

Those are some nice halves.. I only own two, and I'd like to get a au55 or au58 one, for my type set. I want the whole date set in the future.. any tips for how to tell if a coin has been messed with? and what does the term altered surfaces really mean? So that last link that I posted, its pretty obvious it has been cleaned right? there are some pretty obvious scratch lines. So is the toning natural? I like this one, but it looks like there is a big blotch on the holder on the back http://www.ebay.com/itm/1877-50C-PC...em231aaabd2eis that original toning?

Quote: Here is a link to a dime, I dont see hairlines but the surfaces just look weird Half Dime...just dark, perhaps retoned to cover a cleaning. Quote: Here is a link to a half. What are the small holelike things on each side of her head? Why the heck is the "N" in "UNITED" on the rev. so chunky? It's not a var. Just nicks from circulation. Bottom on N could have been hit with something. Quote: Another half, this time obviously cleaned harshly on the front, but only small fields of hairlines are seen on the rev., has most of rev. retoned? Grossly overgraded VG, looks like her shoulder was removed. Quote: another half.. the eagle on the rev looks too shiny, yet the motto is barely readable. cleaned? Just plain looks wrong to me. Definitely isn't a Morgan silver dollar. Quote: And finally, one that appeals to me. Those are beauties muddler! I'm not saying ANACS is wrong but it seems that 9/10 coins I see in ANACS's holders, seem to have a details grade.

after looking coin by coin, I'm having such a problem finding one that looks original for a good price.. I limited my searchs down to au50-au58 pcgs and ngc, and still all the coins seems like there is so much chatter on their surfaces this looks like a very honest coin though : ) http://www.ebay.com/itm/1858-Seated...em3a6aa53c57

If you're putting together a seat for your own enjoyment, and dont ever intend to sell them, dont worry about whether they've been cleaned or not (disregarding harshly cleaned) If its to eventually sell, then definitely worry about it more. If I see a coin I truly like, regardless of its condition, I'll get it, cause I'm not concerned about reselling. Most coins from older dates have been cleaned/wiped regardless.

I only wanted to have the proof coin slabbed to protect it. The grade and altered surface really bummed me out, what say is an altered surface?

That's why TPG's are just another opinion...period. That's why I can care less what they think the grade is. I like the long term protection of slabs. Definitely true that most coins from the early to mid 1800's have had some sort of light wipe or cleaning. Believe me, being a collector of Large Cents, it's a challenge to find problem free examples especially the earlier dates.

Thanks Toned, that is a good point. I definitely dont buy coins that are harshly cleaned.. the two I own show no evidence of cleaning, but have both probably been wiped or something. Does this coin look original though? http://www.ebay.com/itm/1858-Seated...em3a6aa53c57and what does altered surfaces mean vs. cleaned surfaces

That listing has been removed. Altered surfaces are surfaces that have been treated by any means to improve a coins appearance. Some of this is done to disguise a cleaning but not always.

TPG companies are in the business to make $$$$$ Also, long term protection for coins in Slabs is not Guaranteed as far as I know! Very old coins without some type of problem are very far and few between! Good Luck!
