GW, that's a beautiful Barber! Congrats.
I had a pretty crazy week with my 2 boxes of halves too. Not a lot of silver, but what an odd mix: 3 Franklins 2 Franklin Proofs (58 and 60), absolutley beautiful 1 90% Kennedy 1 40% Kennedy 3 Kennedy Proofs 1 1986 Statue of Liberty Commemorative 2 NIFC
That is easily the oddest mix of coins I have seen. I'm not even sure how I should count those proof Franklins below! They are gorgeous.
Since June 2007 halves searched = $9470 Walkers = 20 Franklins = 32 90% Kennedy = 26 40% Kennedy = 60 Proof = 19 (58, 60, 72, 73, 76, 80, 81x3, 82, 85, 87x2, 91, 95, 98, 02x2, 04) Commemorative = 2

Harnessman, Here's what you do......send them to me and I'll send you a '64 and it's a no brainer. I'll even pay for the stamp to mail it to you. Great box. Are you searching boxes from the fed? I get three different style boxes. One is flat with only one level of rolls. One is more square and plain brown box. The last is shaped like the previous but has yellow print on it.

Found a 1948 and a 1942 (not silver )Jefferson nickel in this weeks search. Oldest Jefferson's that I've found up here in the Great White North. Kind of makes them extra-special.

I don't know where you guys are getting your boxes, but I've gotten 8 boxes and just 3 NIFC's and a 1980 proof. NO SILVER! Maybe it's time to find another bank to get my boxes from.

Hey gee dubya,
Are your boxes fed? If you got a mix, which do you have the best luck with? Mine are the flat boxes, I asked my teller and she told me that they came from the FRB in Dallas. I'm running pretty low in the silver dept. and you seem to be banking. Congrats. Any advice or pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I've never asked where they come from, but they are single layer brown boxes with yellow print. The rolls are laid out 5 wide by 10 long. The rolls are wrapped in white paper with yellow print.
I have gotten skunked twice, but generally I have had great success. I have certainly had batches with more keepers, but last night's batch might be the coolest overall.

I've had the best luck with the flat box, next square box with yellow writing, worst luck with plain brown square box. I'm told that the square box with yellow is from the Fed. I'll have to ask about the other two. Advice: 1. Its all about volume. 2. If the boxes all come from the same place they should have the same mix, theoretically. I believe this but my car drives to the banks where I've had the best luck . Keep track of how many you find from each bank. 3. Look in the tellers coin tray to see if they have any silver and ask them to hold any that are old for you. Hope this helps.

When a bank teller tells you where they think the boxes are from, it's usually just an opinion and not fact. Head tellers that have done special orders (not just the commemorative quarters or dollars) are more likely to understand if they are dealing directly with a FRB or an independent cash handling service. The farther you are from the FRB, the more likely an independent cash handling service is doing the rolling as the cost of transportation starts to out weigh the cost of rolling the coins.

The info I have comes from tellers who order the boxes for me and have seen the FED truck make the deliveries. My flat boxes supposedly come from United Armor and every branch I have asked said the same thing.
I guess the only way I could be absolutely sure would be to see the truck coming and leaving.

I've been skunked with about the last 20 boxes in Dallas so I quit getting them. Something happened b/c my first few boxes resulted in excellent finds. then it just shut off. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted, now I just wonder into the back occasionally and ask if they have any turned in. Answer 90% of the time is no.

This last week I have been searching mainly nickels and found about a half dozen 1949 and older, the oldest being 1939. Today while on lunch I hit up my lucky bank for halves. At this bank I have found 2 '67's and 1 '68 out of $40 worth of halves, they do not have rolls only loose ones from their coin machine. I have tried to get them to tell me how many they have but it seems they do not want to count them all. At first I got $20 in halves because that was all I had on me. Out of that $20 I got 1 1967D. While back at work I couldn't stop thinking of what else they had. So on my break I went back and got $50 more and pulled a 1967, 1968 and 1969 Kennedy. So 4 40% halves out of $70 worth. One teller did mention they could order a box and I could buy from it at my leisure like $50 or $100 at a time. I am thinking of taking them up on it

Got another $40 worth of halves at the bank next door and got 3 more 40%. 2-1967 and a 1968-D. Also went through my wife's coins again and found a 1907 Liberty nickel.

Got the usual wheats and Geo VIs in the last box of pennies, but also managed to get a Geo V 1933 cent and a shiny Bermuda cent with a pig on the reverse! LOL
