My wife and I had never searched rolls until reading this post of Ben's. We decide to try half dollar rolls and I went to the bank my company works with so I knew they would be helpful. I picked up 10 rolls and went home. When we checked them we found a number of 90% silvers and a couple of 40%. I went back to the bank and found out they had somewhat over $500 worth of half rolls left and I purchased all of them. When it was over, my darling and I had found well over $500 at spot price in half dollars. Most of these were Franklin and Walkers. My wife and I were immediately planning our retirement. Since then we have looked at 100s of rolls from other banks and have found exactly one 40%er. Deb says we need to find banks with dust on the bottles. Obviously these rolls had been setting there for a long time. My plan now is to go to small towns were the turnover on half dollars would be very slow and hope they have some rolls. May work, probably not, but it has sure been fun trying. Jim

It sounds like you may be getting hooked there Jim1953. I hope to get back to it soon. I have pretty much went thought the half dollar rolls at my local banks. I guess I will have to start ordering boxes next. With my bank though they require you order $1000 worth so I need to get the extra funds. Good luck everyone, BenVA

went to a new bank and signed up there today. Bought all of the $130 in halves they had, no silver, although I did get 1 1991-s proof (kinda messed up though) and a 2002-d. I also got a 2005-d from 3.50 worth of halves I bought at my other bank a few days ago. It's funny b/c that was the 1st time that'd happened, and than it happened a few days later Got some more halves coming sunday - wish me luck.

I have been saving cents, dimes, nickels, quarters and dollars for over 25 years. Only the last few years I started in the coin collecting hobby and started looking through my stash and have been lucky finding wheat cents from 1918, go figure.....
It's so much fun, its like treasure hunting. I even found a
1979 SBA wide rim.
Some others include Washington silvers, mistakes on some other various coins.
I also think I may have found a 1967 Roosevelt dime that might be a DDO which I have posted in the Error category of the forum. Maybe I will find out if its true....

First post here guys, great site, I am curious as to how a Proof coin ends up in a circulated roll? I have a few of the Washington Dollar rolls lying around that I was going to save for a few years. I imagine an unopened, uncirculated roll will appreciate over the years? Great site,

Thomas

Welcome.

I've found two proof coins in rolls. I believe the only way they can get there is if someone breaks them out of a collection and takes them to the bank. What a shame, except for the person that finds them.

Well, my rolls came in today. 2 had nothing in them, the other 2 had 4 40%'s each; go figure.

And in answer to the proof question, I imagine there are 3 real ways it happens.
1. Someone dies, and their unknowledgeable heirs just "cash them in," w/o thinking about numismatic value.
2. they are stolen, and the thief doesn't want to alert the fuzz by selling a bunch of rolls of old coins; or, they assume they are just reg. coins w/ reg value.
3. They have actually been in our out of circulation for a long time. I.e, a 1964 dime that has circulated since 1964, or, someone deposited a bunch of coins 20 years ago at a small bank and they've just been sitting there, or they get sold to another bank, etc.

I stopped into Walmart the other day and when the check out clerk
was giving me change, I noticed he had to open a roll of pennies.
When he opened the roll I noticed that they were all new(?) and shiny.
I asked him if he had another roll and he said sure. Sure enough
they were 2007.

Well, got my 150 worth of halves, and did not get a single silver, proof, or non-circ. I did get a full rolls worth of 1999-d halves in 65+, which is great since they have the lowest circulation mintage, other than the 99' p's. I always hang on to good condition ones of those dates - could be sleepers a million years from now.

I'm definetly a roll searcher. This week I found:
A 1970S nickel
A 1910 wheat
and about 3 wheats. So I don't do to bad.

I just opened 17 Nickel rolls and I found a Buffalo, a 1940, a 2001 with an odd gold tint, and a Canadian 5 cent

I have an unopened US Nickel roll with an Australia 2 Cent piece at the end.

Any ideas if that's be worth anything unopened as an oddity on ebay?

so I just got my first set of rolls to look through, 8 customer rolls and two from the FED. In the 8, I found a 67, 68, and a 64!! Not in perfect shape, but I was surprised b/c these have the nice silver cling to them! The two FED rolls were 1993 brand new. Should I just leave those in the roll and save them? I have two so I can save one and take one back. Curious on what you guys think? Thanks

I guess you could call me a roll hunter ,,I just finished 20 OBR's of 1990-D lincoln cents,, I found four different Reverses and two different obverses,,

as well as a few Very nice MS coins ,I believe will grade at 68 RD perhaps a bit higher .

I love it when that happens !! definitely an upgrade for the collection !!
