Numi, I find it is best to be vary vague with any bank person on what you want and why. You may start new collectors by spelling out all the details, then there goes your bank as a source. I know she is your friend but other tellers may become the next coin roll hunter to post here.
If asked I sometimes say I am a coin collector and buy and sell coins to fill my books.

Hmmm, I see your point cyberdan. Guess I'll try to be a little more discreet in my dealings with her or any other bank folks from here on out. I'll rethink my plan of action with my bank friend and go from there. Thanks.

I went to a local coin show last weekend and one dealer was paying 10x face for 90% silver halves and quarters. Currently silver is over 11x face but you made out just fine if you sold the silver obtained at face value from rolls.

I just got done with $1000 worth of halves last weekend, and $50 (5000) pennies today. I think I may take a small break myself. I just started and it's fun, dont get me wrong, but it's a heck of alot of work.

Ok I got through the pennies late last night and here are the so-so results:
12 Wheats (nothing rare on 1st inspection) 26 Canadian pennies, oldest was 1943
I also broke it down into 59-82 95% copper, and 82 and after with 1547 of the cents being 95% copper (yeah I weighed all of the 1982 coins). I only mention this because there seems to be talk of people hoarding these for the day when the law against melting them is repealed. So it was fun, but alot of work. I might go with quarters next but it sounds like most people dont have alot of luck finding silver in these.

I've been really enjoying coin roll hunting.I only started on the 22nd of this month and I am hooked already.
I had planned to get about $120 in half dollars yesterday but had a bit of an awakening when I learned that most banks aren't open at all on Saturdays in my area. Maybe it's the same everywhere and guess I didn't know that. Since the banks I had been to were closed, I found a couple others that were open and managed to find three rolls of halves. Found nothing of note in these.
I'm learning that there must be a few people in my area that are searching the rolls of halves too. I've gotten several rolls that had an X of one form or another which indicates to me that those where someone's rejects. Must be right 'cause I found nothing of interest in those that where marked.
CoinHunter53562 - (or anyone else that can help). Could you please help me learn a little more about pennies? What was the last year that pennies where made with the 95% copper? Also What is the last year that the wheat cents where made? I have a few wheaties, including one of the '43 steelies. I have a handful that are are from the 20's and 30's with the oldest being a 1920. I also have one centenial Canadian cent. Don't have it in front of me and I don't recall the date right now. Any other info on the cents, that you might think would be helpful, is much appreciated. Thanks for your help.
My finds in halves since the 22nd of this month are as follows: Total searched - $260
8 - 40% silver 1 full roll of 1998D BU 1 - 1976S
Unfortunately my halves searching will have to halt for a little while because funds are tight right now and I need to deposit the $120 I've been working with. But I hope to be back at it very soon.

Picked up $300 dollars in halves from a small town bank last Friday and it was pretty sweet. I scored 4 90%(one being a 63D Franklin) and 32 40%. It was awesome. One roll that I opened had 14 40% and 1 90%, I almost flipped. My wife is going back on Monday to relieve them of the rest of their halves, I'll let yall know how that goes.

1982 is the cutoff year for coppers, every thing after is copper plated (and worthless) and everything before is 95% copper, with the exceptions of a few odd years here and there (1943 being the most well known). 1982, however, was an interesting year. There are 7 different major varities: -Copper Large Date (philly) -Copper Small Date (Philly) -Copper Large Date (Denver) -Zinc Large Date (Philly) -Zinc Small Date (Philly) -Zinc Large Date (Denver) -Zinc Small Date (Denver) You can tell the difference between the Zinc and Coppers by wieght (can't recall the exact numbers but something like 3.11 grams and 2.54 grams?) You can usually spot the difference by color as well, as I have found the Copper cents tend to age better into that old brownish-wheatie look. Wheat backs ran from 1909-1958. Basically, I keep all of the old coppers I find, though if roll searching this can add up after a few boxs. I seem to find roughly $7 per-box of pre-82s, as well as maybe $.25 of 1982 that I keep as well. I throw all the moderns back, void when replacing a coin in my book or if I find an error or foreign (got a new bag of Canadians ). Its not really worth having a couple rolls full of 1991 circulated Lincolns you know? I believe the Centenial was 2002 though I could be making that up. I haven't yet gotten to involved with Canadians, though I do plan on it once I've filled out a few more parts of my collection tht have been lacking. --Gary

Went through $50 in nickels today and found 13 pre-1960 keepers as well as a nearly uncirculated 1965. This is the second batch of nickels in a row that has produced a nearly uncirculated 1965 for me ... ... why can't they be uncirculated Buffalo's, or 1950D's?

The 95% copper pennies should weigh 3.1 grams, while the mostly zinc ones will come in at 2.5 grams. I use a small digital scale that measures to the tenth of a gram. I picked it up from the supply guru at the last coin show I went to for $19 and it is well worth it. I did notice that the 95% copper pennies seemed to be slightly thicker than the pennies made today but maybe that was just my eyes going buggy after looking at 5000 coins. For Canadian copper cents, I dont have the exact numbers in front of me but this site should give you a relative idea on what they are worth based on copper content alone: http://www.wescottfamily.net/copper.html

Numi, out here in SoCA all banks (9 out of 10)are open on Saturday till 1PM. That is my banking day.
I was really busy Saturday morning. Had to drop off my daughter for one of those SAT subject tests (11th grade) in a town about 10 miles away. Hadn't done any "banking" there in a few months. Found $560 in halves, half were someone elses dump, $2 in dimes, and about $450 in cents. The cents were accumulated over two weeks.
In the halves I found 2-90% JFK and 7-40% The reason I only got $2 in dimes is because a teller overheard me talking to another teller and asked if I collected coins. I said yes and she pulled out 19 silver dimes, 3 were mercs. I asked her how much she wanted and she said $1.90. She had been saving them for about three years.
On the cents, as I said took me two weeks to get all those, half was this last Saturday. I had to carry every pound up one flight of stairs. Sunday I went through every single one in my Ryedale copper sorter. I got about $100 in copper cents, a bid handfull of wheats (more than 2 rolls) several foreign coins and almost $5 in dimes. I always try to get customer wrapped penny rolls. Somehow dimes always seem to slip in there, many times they are extras.
