jbuck, didn't even think of the sharp edges! the coin will almost have a concave (bowl-like) edge to it.
Anyway, just completed my nickel box of the day (50 rolls) here is the results:
21 pre-58 (including 1 silver nickel (1945P))
Nothing else really exciting; actually, with the exception of the silver, a pretty dull box.
Here are my grand totals:
361 rolls 139 pre-1958 (most common: 1941 (15)) 11 silver nickels (most common: 1943S (4)) 1 Bermuda nickel 1970
Also went through $130 in halfs today; absolutely nothing to find. More tomorrow!

F150 - I have a 62-95 nickel book filled already. I could probably start another one, but it would get filled so quickly that I don't think it would be fun or worth it. I do have two 38-61 nickel books I'm working on. Since they're older it's a little more fun!

Finally did my first two boxes of halves ($1000 total). Not a huge find but had these:
3 - 40% silver 6 - NIFC
So 9 out of 2000 coins were keepers. Hopefully next time will be better.

Hello All Found this site last night while looking for metal detecting treasure stories (I love a good find) and I just couldn't believe what I was reading. Stayed up until almost 2 am reading this post along with a few others on the site....You guys are getting better results than I ever dreamed of with my detector!! Anyway, today I went to my bank, withdrew $500, and asked if they had any Kennedy halves. This branch didn't but they called 3 other branches. 1 branch had 4 rolls and their main branch had a bag of unrolled...said there might be around $400 there. I went to the main branch and three tellers were in the process of rolling the coins and my thought was "Oh NO...there goes the silver!" They ended up having about $190 total and even gave me a Guatemalan coin that was in the mix. From there I went to the second branch and got the 4 rolls. I stopped at every bank on the way home and asked for any halves they had. Some had a few, some had none, 1 had a roll. I got home and did a couple things around the house that I hadn't finished (my day off and the "honey-do" list wasn't done yet). When my wife got home we decided to go out for supper but I had to show her what I was going to do. She reached into the cloth bag for a roll, opened it, and let the coins slide out. The second coin in the roll was a '62 Franklin, followed by a '64 Kennedy, and finally a '68 Kennedy! I was pumped and she was not as skeptical (LOL) I searched $257.50 and here are my finds: 2 '62 Frankilins, one is AU 4 '64 Kennedys, one is AU 4 '65 Kennedys 4 '66 Kennedys 7 '67 Kennedys 3 '68D Kennedys 3 '69D Kennedys 1 '69S Kennedy with big ol' fingerprint right in the middle of the head 1 '73S Kennedy...beautiful coin! 1 2000 Guatemala Quetzal I was also able to fill 1 of 2 empty spots in my Kennedy folder and will be able to upgrade quite a few of the others. Now a question. I plan on going back thru these again before depositing them in a different bank. What dates/errors should I be looking for? Is there an area here where I can get good info? The head teller at the main branch told me she could order more boxes for me, $1000 at a time, but I could go thru them $500 at a time. I work for Wendy's so I'll be delivering some Frostys to these tellers tomorrow, trust me on that one!

Hello everyone, I've been reading this awesome thread for the past couple of days and thought it was time to register and share my story/finds. I was only recently tipped off about coin roll hunting. Even though I had done a tiny bit of it when I worked for a pizza delivery place, it never occured to me that it might be worth it to go to my bank to buy a bunch of rolls to go through. At that old job I just went through a few rolls of dimes and quarters over the few years that I worked there. I found about 4 pre '64 dimes and about a half dozen quarters. Had I known what I know now I might have made more of an effort of it. Anyway, on 1/21/08 I first learned about searching the rolls of halves. It made sense to me to go with the halves because the odds seemed greater to find silver and other desirable coins. After I got this info, I was so excited about it, I could hardly wait until the next day to go out and give it a shot! So I got busy rounding up some cash without dipping into my checking account too much to do so. I had a bunch of Sacageweas that I had no real desire to save so I decided they would go toward this new venture. I also had a half gallon spare change jar I needed to go through and this gave me a good excuse to do it. Ironically, while rolling up my change I found a 1945 war nickle. Cool! Prior to 1/21/08 I hadn't even known about the war nickles and here I find one in about 2.50 worth of nickles. Who'da thought? Made me wonder how many I had passed up over the years. So, after rounding up my change etc I ended up with $128 to try out on the roll hunting. I purchased $100 in halves and since I found a 1945 nickle in my loose change at home I thought it would be a good idea to get $28 in nickles. Well, the nickles were kind of a bust. I found about 1/2 dozen pre '69 nickles. I didn't get much of a look at them yet I just tossed them in a jar and put them up on a shlef. I wanted to tear into the halves! I must of had a bit of so-called beginner's luck because the first roll of halves I've ever opened in my life, held 1 1968 Kennedy! I was spurred on. I opened a few more with not much exciting. Then I came to a roll that contained four more 40%'s all in the same roll! Oh yeah, I was stoked now! The rest produced nada but I was (and still am) excited about my first attempt at this. I went out the next day and searched $60 more in halves. I got 2 rolls from one bank and 4 from another. The bank I got 4 rolls from gave me one roll that had "UNC '98" written on the wrapper. That seemed interesting at least. When I got these home the one roll was indeed a full roll of beautiful shiny (uncirculated?) '98 halves. Are these worth anything over face value? The other two rolls came from "tiny town USA". This is a very old and unusual bank. When I first asked them about half dollars they said they couldn't sell them to me because they use them in their "machine". What!? This bank is kind of novel I guess and they have this 100+ year old coin dispensing machine that they use on a daily basis when giving change to their customers! A little odd but kinda cool too. To make a very long story a bit shorter, they agreed to let me buy just two rolls if I agreed to bring them back after I went through them. Oh twist my arm...I will if I have to. I found one 40%er in one of those rolls. Now today I went back to that old bank with their two rolls plus three more I'd gotten from the other bank. I swapped those for five rolls and they let me get an additional two more on the promise that I'd bring those back. No problem! I found one more '68 and one bicentenial S mint. Is this '76 of any significant value? It doesn't seem to be a proof, though I've never really seen a proof aside from photos. I also searched $40 in dimes but found nothing. I was only looking for silver in the dimes but found none. The two '68 Kennedys I found from this old bank were in the same type wrapper. May be a sign to ask for only this type wrapper when I go back. I think I'm hooked on this stuff. I'm looking forward to getting my tax return so I can use some of it to perhaps get a box ordered. Now a question or two if I may. I have one bicentenial S mint Eisenhower dollar that was given to me as a tip during my pizza delivery days. Does anyone know if this has any significant value? To me, it looks very much like the '68 halves in appearance including from the edge view. Were any of these made in the 40% silver? Because this is what it looks (and sounds) like to me. Also, when you guys refer to old "copper" cents how do these differ from the other pennies? Just to offer a little advice to some of you who have been having trouble finding halves at your bank (my wife worked for a bank for years-if only I had known..). If you have an account at a bank there should be no reason why they shouldn't be able to order you, their customer, some half dollars in any amount. Especially if you're getting a full box. Of course you'll still need to talk to the right person to get this done. I also learned when I took my first rolls of change in, that some banks at least, simply weigh rolls of coins to determine if they contain the correct amount of coins. Also for those of you that feel a little down because you "only" found a couple good coins in a whole box. Consider this. Most metal detectorists would be totally excited to have found as many good coins in the same time frame and for as little effort. Kind of puts roll hunting into perspective now doesn't it? Total finds to date: -1 full roll unc '98 halves -8 40% silver halves (7-'68's & 1-'67) -1 1976 bicentenial S mint half -1 1945 silver War Nickel-Some other old nickels Thanks for any help any of you might be able to offer a newbie like myself. Lots of fun so far. I look forward to sharing and learning much more on this forum.......Numi63 out.

Numi63 - To answer one of your questions: old "copper" prior to 1982 cents (aka pennies - but our coins don't actually say that) were made out of copper. In 1982 the US Mint changed the alloy to a copper plated zinc. In 1982 coins were made out of both alloys.

Finally caught up with my roll searching today. Had about $100 in nickles I had not searched. Found 1 canada nickle, and 13 pre-60 nickles, with the oldest being a 1939. Searched $5 in pennies and found 6 wheat pennies. Loved one roll had a wheat just staring me in the face. It turned out to be a 1936. Going to try and start keeping count of what I search and my results like everyone else. I've asked the bank to order me some halves and will pick up about $300 in coins this afternoon. Just got to pick which bank branch gets all these nickles :)

WELCOME of-grampa..
You had quite a search! If I found that many 40% in 267 dollars I would be ordering by the thousands daily! That is amazing! Good for you!
I work a night job as a bartender so I get the chance to go through alot of coins in my and other bar staffs drawers and find myself bringing home rolls. Also, I am a regular nightly at a Dunkin Donuts on the way home and when I stop in the guy working will give me 4 rolls of pennies a few nights a week and of course he gets a tip in his coffee cup for the courtesy! This provides me with enough in between boxes of pennies and halves!
I am into searching pennies right now and I encourage you to do the same, when money is tight and you don't have the money to search halves. I found the halves to be a problem because my local commerce bank only has a coin counting machine that holds $100 at a time. Besides making a scene putting change in it, I once had to have the teller come out from behind the counter 3 times in one transaction to change out the half dollar bag! So now I am going to open an account their and dump in rolls I think. My bank next door is a nice homely small town bank that I get my coins from and boy have I buttered up those tellers with chocholates, etc.!

Welcom numi63- can you try to put your postings into more paragraphs- very hard to read and answer your questions!
76S halves and 76S Ike are keepers. I'd probably keep the BU 98 roll, too, though it is a common date, but still BU JFKs from circulation are hard to come by, except for 71 thru 76.

arthrene- Thank you for answering my question on old "copper". I didn't know about the change from copper in '82 to copper plated zinc.
mycrob- Sincere apologies for the long paragraphs without proper breaks in them. Had I read the forum rules more thoughrouly to begin with I would have been more diligent about that before making my first post. I'm a bit new to posting on forums at all. Again, sorry about that. Thank you for patienly answering my questions anyway. Being a newbie, I'm only guessing at what BU means. Is it Brilliant Uncirculated?
This is a really great topic. It seems that many more agree. My thanks to BenVA for starting it.
I'm planning to search another $110 in rolls of halves today. I'll be sure to post here on my results/finds. Wish me well.

Great finds in the dimes- I hear so few good stories about searching dimes.
BU= Brilliant Unicirculated.
I am in withdraw. I ordered $1000 in halves more than two weeks ago and they were supposed to be in this past Wed, but they're not coming in until next Wed now. UGH! The teller happened to have $240 in halves brought in by a customer just the day before plus $20 in IKEs, so I snatched all of those up and will be roll hunting this weekend. Wish me luck.

WOW! All kinds of new people getting into roll searching; GREAT! So far today $140 in halfs; nothing but swings and misses. Should have the funds to order a box early next week; will be doing so.
Meanwhile, my unofficial and informal nickel survey continues. I think that my ultimate goal will be to go through 12500 rolls, which is half a million coins. Why do it? Not for profit, obviously (the halfs are a little better for that) but just for fun! I hope to complete it by the end of the year. All I will keep track of are the numbers of pre-1958's out there. I will set up a separate thread, and if anyone wants to keep track or comment feel free. The thread will be called "Goal: 12500 rolls of nickels".
Working on 100 rolls right now!
BEST OF LUCK TO EVERYONE!! Keep letting everybody know what you find; it keeps eveybody going during those dry spells!

Well, I didn't get the chance to get the $110 in half dollars I wanted to search today. But I did add another $10 to the pot to be used on Monday for a total of $120 to put toward buying halves. I added my handful of Susan B's to my coin roll buying pot. If anyone has a reason to offer on why I shouldn't let the SB's go, let me know before Monday or they'll be gone.
I got to wondering about who I might know that works at one of the local banks. Then I remembered one of the girls I used to work with at my old job. She left there and actually went to work for the very bank we do our banking at. She used to be a teller so I gave a call to the branch I thought she worked at (this bank has four branches in my area). I learned she had been promoted to admistrative assistant and now worked at the main office over on main street.
I know, you're wondering what's the point? Well I asked her if she wouldn't mind asking some of her teller friends if they would keep an eye out for some of the coins I'm looking for. She was very nice and very helpful. She seemed more than happy to help even before I mentioned that there was a box of chocolates in it for her :). She even took the time to write down some of the specific coins I was interested in. She informed me that she'd give me a call back in a week to let me know what she may have found. What a nice girl. No wonder she got promoted.
I intend to pay her a visit before a week is up to put some cash in her hand. That way she'll be covered for what the tellers might take out of their drawer. I'm able to do this because I know her pretty well and trust her enoug to do so. While I'm at her office I'm going to see what else I can find out about buying coins by the box. I'm betting she will not only know the best and most helpful person to go to but also which would be the best branch to work with on this. I'll let you all know how it goes.
