Something that I have been doing that has had a little bit of success is checking out branches of banks in food stores for half dollars. For some reason in my area, the silver hunters don't hit these banks, perhaps thinking that their main purpose is to supply the store with change or whatever. I went into one two weeks ago asking for halves, and the teller was amazed, saying "I thought nobody would ever want these, and there are too few to send back to the Fed". She gave me four rolls, which almost every other coin was either silver or clad, including a Bennie. Good Luck!

Saw a program last night about how things are made. One of the items was a quarter change machine.
The bottom line is that the coin box capacity is $800 in quarters. That does not mean that every laundromat owner will fill it to capacity, but there is a potential of a lot of quarters to search.
One note, I once bought a $500 bag of quarters from a bank's coin counter and this is what I found.
$500 worth of quarters.
As XavierOfGreen pointed out, quarters are the hardest to find silver in.

That is a good idea but where I live the tellers seem to know the least about halves, many had never even seen one. They also tend to be the least helpful. I just found a branch in a local store open on Sunday. I will save that one for this sunday if I am in the area.

Hi Everyone, I am new to this forum, and would like some feeback. I just purchased 2 boxes of halves. I just got back from my bank to cash them in, and come to find out that my bank's machine does not take halves ! I had to sit there with the teller and count them all out, and this is after spending a few hours looking all of them over. Has anyone else run into this problem ? I also want to know what I should be looking for besides the dates with the halves. Thanks so much, this is a great forum.

"Has anyone else run into this problem ?" Every bank is different. Did you bring them in loose? Hope you did not take them back to the same bank you bought them at, if so time to get another supply bank. Because they will not want to get you boxes and then take back coins.
I always roll small amounts or bag in $500. Count must be acurate and bag must be the heavy security plastic ones. My bank encourages this and even furnishes all I need.

I would recommend what Dan said and keep your supply and dump banks separate. Also, call ahead and ask the dump bank if they prefer rolls or loose coins and make sure you specify what you have so that you dont run into a problem with the coin machine not accepting what you have. Good luck and welcome to the forum!

When I went to the bank, I only took half of the amount with me. It's a good thing that I did, or else I would have been there a very long time! I didn't go to the same bank that I got the coins from. After my first post, I took the second half to the main branch of my bank and had not probem,. It seems that the branch banks don't have the correct machine. I guess my other alternatiave is to open another bank account where the have an adaquate machine. Next time I will only get $500 worth. Any comments on what I should be looking for other than dates ? Also, is "The Red Book" the best one to have ? I thought I purchased the right book, but found out that I hadn't. Red cover, but not the Red Book. I am thinking of returning what I have and ordering the right one. Thanks again for the input. Susan

Oh, one more thing, I asked them at the bank if they had rolls for the halves, and she said no. Do other banks have them ?

Most banks are happy to give out paper coin wrappers for free. But most banks do not carry half dollar one. Just keep asking, my local BofA ordered a box after I kept asking. Trouble is I bought two boxes of my own before they told me about it. I mostly use plastic bags. But when I only have 200-300 dollars I roll them up.
any body want to buy a lot of wrappers?

Wow, you guys were right. Finding large quantities of $.50 pieces is tough. I wonder if there is a pattern with large national bank chains. As far as who has them and who doesn't. For example, I went to 2 UMB banks, and they had about $20 total, loose in their drawers. I went to a Commerce Bank, they had a few rolls, but they will only do coin exchanges if you have an account there. Do you find yours at any large bank chains? If so where? Morg

my BOAs only have them on rare occasions, and they are a couple loose ones. I've yet to get a customer roll from a BOA.

In 15 min I will be on my way to pick up my weekly allotment of $500 or $1000 in halves at my BofA. Depends on what the vault teller orders. They know I will be in every Friday. Never a charge and sometimes one of the merchant tellers has been able to save $50-75 in paper wrapped cents. She knows I really like old faded wrappers.

I just searched my first FR box. Found 1 64, no 40% clad; 1 2005P; that's it.
We have a major coin show in town every first Sunday in each Month. There are many silver hunters here. They can cash in their silvers very readily at the show. Loose coins in local banks yield nothing.

The 40% silver Kennedys are obviously the most common silver halves you see in rolls. If I averaged out all the rolls I've searched, I'd guess they occur at a rate of 1 or two out of 100 coins. The 90% silvers are probably 5 times as scarce, and of those probably 8 out of 10 would be 1964 Kennedys. Walking Liberty halves are at least 10 times scarcer than 1964 Kennedys. With the long odds against finding even common-date Walkers, how lucky was I to find this semi-key in yesterday's rolls? I'm still shaking my head.....
