Hello Bernied,
As for requesting coin rolls from a bank, I haven't had much problem yet except when it comes to half dollar rolls. The only problem there is that many banks just don't use them. When you request some rolls of coins just say you want X number of whatever coins you want at the time. If you like, you can tell them you are building some sets of coins for your kids or whatever. It would seem odd to me that a bank would not give you as many as they could spare at the time, even if they have to go into the vault. That's what financial institutions are there for.

If you come upon a bank that hassles or questions you about selling them to you, just go to another bank. Also, I seem to find folks more helpful at the main branches than out in some of the sattelite branches. It doesn't have to be the bank you bank at either. Although it may help in some cases if you have an account at the particular bank. I've been to numerous banks so far and only three of those are branches of my bank. I've never had any of them deny what I've requested except when they didn't have half dollars. Most don't even bat an eye. But in some cases they might look at you a little funny when you ask for $500 in half dollars or something like that. But trust me, many on this forum do just that and on a regular basis.

dreyfus - Thay's an interesting question about the quarters at the laundry mats. I had wondered briefly about this myself. Only thing is I don't know if this would be of much use to us. Question is how would you be accessing the coins? Asking the vendors/owners for large amounts of change for washing? It would be nice to be able to somehow get at the coins that come straight out of the washers & dryers but I don't know how you'd go about it? Maybe you could check with the owners to see when they empty out the coins and offer to buy them instead of them having to haul the coins to the bank. Just speculating here.

It could work but you'd have to approach this just right so as not to make the owners suspicious that you were trying to rob them or something like that. Now that you've brought this up I may have to give it a try myself. I think I could make it work...

Anyone else have any suggestions along these or similar lines?

Strange day on half dollar hunting. I went to my bank and asked them if could ordor 1000 dollars worth halfs. Lady got phone and called every bank in town and located me 630 bucks worth on phone. I was going to go back to try locate more halfs or get special odor.

After buying half dollars from those two banks she called my tire blew out in my car and my spare tire was flat and I had to call an freind to help me buy an tire for car. I guess I tell her what happened and talk with later about it. Strange they have no idea on ordoring half dollars since head bank teller never bought them from loomis before. They not sure if loomis will send them?

Good day on half dollars found.
1. 1976 clad proof.
2. 2002 philly coin.
3. 1 1965, 2 1966, 2 1967, 2 1968d, No pre 1964 found in 360 worth fed rolls, 270 worth hand wraps were nothing but junk and no finds in those.

I cant complain since I got something.

The laundry mat by my house has 2 quarter machines that take 1's, 5's, and 10's. My guess would be that the quarters go straight from the washers and dryers into those machines; unless they have a collector working there that goes through them.

I picture this being potentially successful, but was wondering about how many quarters I would have to go through to find out. Are we talking $100 worth, $500 worth, $1000 worth? Should I just keep going until I find something or should I pick a dollar amount to stop at?

dreyfus - How many quarters you go through before you call it quits is gonna be entirely up to you. I believe you would find some silver and possibly some other oddities of value, eventually, using this method. Maybe sooner maybe later. I know in coin roll hunting some folks have found stuff right off the bat while others have endured looong dry spells. I guess it's kind of like hunting or fishing. It depends on how much you enjoy the hunt. Some would go a long time just in hopes of, one day, catching that trophy.

Just to add a little more creedence to being able to still find silver coinage in circulation.... I worked for a pizza delivery place as a driver for more than six years. In that time I found about 14 silver dimes and more than a dozen quarters in my change. Thing is, I wasn't really even trying that hard. I could have done more to increase my odds by offering to buy all the change from other drivers at the end of their shift. I could have also been more persistant about searching through the drawer change and going through any rolls the store had on hand. I only did this latter suggestion on rare occaision and I never offered to buy the change from other workmates. I now believe I could have found much more this way.

One thing we do have to keep in mind is that quarters are probably the most searched denomination when it comes to pocket change. I know a couple of people personally that always keep an eye out for silver quarters in their change. And they aren't even into numusmatics, they just hoard the coins in a jar or similar. I'm sure everyone here knows someone like this. Even I USED to be one of those people.

Also, I stopped by a local laundry mat this morning on the way back from dropping my son at school. I asked the lady on duty in the dry cleaning section about the very thing we are disscussing. She told me that some of the change they remove from the laundry machines is put back into the $1, $5, and $10 changing machines. But alot of it is simply taken to the bank. The person I spoke with wasn't in charge of this process but the owner was. She gladly gave me his business card. I will be giving him a call to see if I can intercept the coins before he hauls them to the bank. maybe I'll find something maybe I won't. We'll see.

WOW OH WOW... have I ever buttered up the ladies at the bank next door to me!!

After going in to get boxes twice a week now for a few months I am at the point now where the head teller who is now a nice lady wants me to carry the boxes from the vault when I need them so she doesn't have to. So, I give her the money for the type of box I want and today she suprises me by saying from now on she will take me to the vault and let me pick the box I want from the vault. FURTHERMORE, she had 2 boxes of nickels. A brown one which is circulated and also, a white one which she said is uncirculated and I should probably take. Was I amazed! So I grabbed this box hoping for some nice uncirulated nickels! We will see when I crack it open!

I went through a quarter of a box of nickels last night. One roll had a dime (makin' money right off the bat!) and a strange brass coin. It was a 2003 Chinese Wu Jiao (5 Jiao) coin!

A little research indicates this is similar to a half dollar.

in regards to searching laundremats, I'm a bank teller and we have laundremats bring in quarters several times a week, due to the nature of my job I usually get to at least spot check most of the bags for silver. Finding a silver quarter these days, from my own experience, is not impossible but very hard, I adverage only around 2 silver quarters a month and I see at least 10 thousand quarters a month. Even those few quarters I do find are usually 64's, my advise to you Bernied is to stick with halves, they offer more variety as well as a greater frequency of silver per roll

XavierOfGreen- Thanks for the advice. I thought that dirty clothes might be motivation enough for people to dive a little deeper into their change jars. I also like the fact that they're open late, so if you have a late night quarter fix that needs to be satisfied you could get it there. You also don't need to wait in line. I haven't found anything good yet, but I'll keep at it for a little longer.

Ok, you guys have twisted my arm enough, I am going to take the dive into roll hunting. I am going to go to the bank tomorrow, and get halves if they have any, if not I suppose I will go to another bank, lol. Other then pre-1965's are there any other key dates to keep an eye out for? Or point me to a thread/post that addresses this. I also figure that if I am going to be going through that many halves I might as well fill out a Whitman Kennedy book. Input? Pointers before I take the plunge?

MorganNoob,

I'm pretty new at this as well but I'll share with you a couple things I've learned since finding this awesome forum. First you're right about keeping anything pre-'65. Also, keep any S mint in Kennedy halves. Last but not least. Don't forget that, unlike the dimes and quarters, Kennedies continued to be minted in 40% silver clad from 1965 through 1970!

Oh, and just a warning - Once you start you can't stop!

So, enjoy the addiction and happy hunting man !
