Hi all, I have an Meiji era 1875 One Yen in reasonably good condition and would like confirmation on what its value may be? I have had an indication that the 1875 one yen is quite rare so any help would be appreciated, Thanks!

It would be worth a bit if it's genuine in the first place. Can you please post a photo? It would help greatly. Welcome to coincommunity.

Honestly, I really no not like the porous look of the fields, especially on the reverse. Unfortunately, this type of coin is frequently counterfeited in China. So you may have a base metal counterfeit.

Thanks everyone for your help, its good to get confirmation as I have had it in the coin collection for 15 or so years and had never thought it was worth anything, so nothing gained nothing lost!

i came across the same coin, how do you go about collecting information for a true 1875 one yen? it is said that a coin of that year can go for 6000. got the coin at auction for a good price how to prove that its real?

Post a picture first. If you can't post a photo, please weigh it and give more details. A digitial scale shouldn't cost any more than the coin itself. If it's magnetic, you know what it is.

its weight is 21.8 and its non magnetic. I will post a pic soon as I can .i need to find my chip for camera

I don't like the look of it even though the photos are not clear. The weight of a coin struck in that era is supposed to be 26.96g. Seems to be a nickel-copper alloy if it's not magnetic.

it matches the width. what should I do . I read that the coin sold in sept 2011 for 207 thousand in miami. there was no weight or size in the selling. should I get it looked at a where is some where that would grade this coin?

The high price is due to the coin rarity. In the JNDA catalog, the coin is supposed to weigh 26.96g. The Japan Mint had a relatively strict Weight Tolerance and you might expect a weight difference of +- 0.5g. But a difference of more than 5 grams cannot be explained unless some figures are wrong or the coin is counterfeit. There is no instance of the Japan Mint striking coins with wrong weight. Please post a better photo and an image of the rim if possible. I can explain what is wrong with it. At the current moment, it cannot be genuine.
