My last two sets are still backordered but the date has changed once again to the 26th (from the 31st). It looks like they are hoping to get this thing off the books (or at least out the door) by month's end. I will open them as soon as they arrive and then make a final decision about opening the first two sets (which will lose their FS label ability if I open them). Since I already have two "perfect" coins for myself and enough more to make one set for each family member, I may keep the unopened FS sets to give as a gift to another collector like myself, who will appreciate being the "first eyes" on the coins. I do look forward to seeing a full accounting of this set's production & distribution from the mint soon.

My last 2 sets that were ordered minutes prior to the deadline also switched from 10/31 to 10/26 yesterday, but the status is now In Stock and Reserved and my card was charged today. I'm guessing they'll go out on Wednesday.

Mine also changed to "in stock and reserved" and my CC was dinged last night. It would be nice if they ship tomorrow so they would get here Friday but my luck says they will take an extra day or two and not ship mine until Thursday or Friday, delaying receipt to Monday or Tuesday. I almost never get one or two day shipping because of the weekends.

My last 2 sets are in stock & reserve also (from Oct 31st ship date).
The returned set are also in process also.
No tracking number on any of them yet though..... probably not until Friday?

Is this set still eligible for the f/s designation ?

Second, the cut-off date at PCGS for first strike sets was August 25. The Mint fulfilled orders for these sets in batches, and not many of them were received in time to be first-strike eligible because of delays in processing the Mint's orders.

Unopened boxes that are postmarked by or before August 25 are also eligible to be sent in for first strike designation, but news of the low percentage of coins receiving the top grade appears to have deterred many people from sending their sets in for grading.

By the end of October the U.S. Mint plans to complete the process of fulfilling orders for the 2012 San Francisco two-coin American silver eagle proof set. Sometime after that it will announce the final mintage for the set, which will play a key role in shaping premiums for the sets.

It looks like they will meet the end of October goal as long as they are not counting returns in the mix. It appears that all required sets are "in stock and reserved", probably including enough to cover any returns from the final shipping batch. Going on the fact that my July 3rd 9:30PM order was shipped in the last batch, there should be no more than about 25,000 sets left to ship (final total - 3:00PM July 3rd number = 33951). Based on past history, it should take PBGS two or three days to ship the remaining sets. Slow boat shipments could take a week or more to get delivered and then another seven days need to pass before the last return window closes so a final return and cancellation adjusted number should be available by the end of November.

I do hope that they admit to how many sets were returned for replacement, even though those don't technically subtract from or add to final "mintage". Certainly, any sets that were cancelled, either prior to shipment or as a result of return for refund, should subtract from the 251,302 final order number. Since we only have to have a total net cancellation count of 2427 sets, it seems likely that the final "mintage" for this set will fall below the 2006 count, but probably not by very much. Since both sets were essentially mint to order, it appears that true demand hasn't changed much since 2006.

The $300 price tag for the 2011 set probably did not reduce true demand very much but if we are generous and say that true demand for that set was 200,000 (instead of 250,000) we still have only half the number of desired sets in that marketplace, which should keep prices for those coins high for many years to come. The value of the 2006 and 2012 sets will probably fluctuate as sets enter and leave the marketplace. With supply and demand essentially in balance, values will bounce around a base figure as one force or the other is stronger at any given time.

Claire, when you say "last batch"; when did you receive those? I ordered mine late on July the 4th and received mine October 9th. For some reason I have the feeling that they use two sets of metrics. One for single, and possibly first orders; and the second for multiple and subsequent orders.

I could be wrong, but it seems I also hear more complaints about quality from people that ordered multiple sets. And while acknowledging the QC issues, it sometimes appears that some people are considering everything less than a PR70 damaged; and returning them.

In fact I know one dealer that did precisely that. He showed me his rejects/about to return pile. One did indeed have a visible scratch that anyone would return. Another RP had a small hazy spot on the toe. The rest took strong magnification and quite a bit of scrutiny to find. His comment: " I want 70s not 69s, I'm a business man, not a collector".

I had an order not ship for a week longer than I thought it would, then a second order shipped and arrived the same day as the first. Both items were typical, in stock items. That led me to believe shipping date may be determined by buyer name, rather than FIFO. Or it could have been coincidence.

I was able to score a set of PCGS 70 with the bridge label and signed by Mercanti for $299 + $21 shipping from coinvault.com Sunday evening. I don't know if they were mis-priced or not, but they now show no longer available for sale. I had 2 sets that I bought from the mint but never sent in for grading. I think I might just sell my 2 raw ones now.
I think I got a pretty good deal. Just got the UPS tracking number today.

2012 AE SILVER 2-COIN SET 2 $149.95 $299.90 2 units shipped on 10/25/2012

Well, it is early enough in the day to mean that these sets will go out today in the afternoon shipment. It is also Thursday, which means that, as is my lot with the mint, that my two day shipping will take four days and I won't have the coins until Monday. It probably means that there is a good chance that the last sets will be shipped tomorrow. They put the hold on my CC a full three days early this time. I really wish that PBGS would end this entirely unnecessary practice (also a violation of mint policy in FAQs, supposed to ship the same day they charge).

I've returned 3 sets, they accepted and emailed saying credited my CC (3 days already) but nothing show up on the CC. However, they have put the pending charge on my CC at the same time (it shown up on my CC online status, that's how I know).

The returns are for a 1-1 replacements, why do they need to do the return and then repurchase. If it's standard accounting practice then they should do properly by crediting your account first (when they first accepted your return) and should not charge you until they actually ship the coins. What they are doing right now (just as clair experienced in the past and had voice his concern) created a -$450 on my CC for nothing and ALSO kick my CC balance to be over limit.

Side note: How come a credit return take so long to show up on the CC (Amex) while a charge showing up right away?

Some of its dependent on how long it takes the merchant to actually go in the system and process the return, but of course they always charge right away
