@ NSS-52 This c/s looks like it might have belonged to an early toolmaker. It's extremely well cut, and I suspect that the maker produced fine, precision tools of some sort. No clues found in the Directory of American Toolmakers.

@Dorado .... Cool piece that I've not before seen. You can likely find some history on Nevill and his "Patent" soup!

I completely understand that this is a post mint mark, however I have never seen one like this. I bought it just cause it was odd to me. What is your feedback. (Only payed $20 so not a big loss for my curiosity ) Thank You

@jbedwell ... If the reverse has a CC mintmark, you've scored! Otherwise, $20 is a fair price for random initials, offering virtually no chance of attribution; this, considering it's a silver dollar. I do suspect that there are a few collectors out there, I'm not one of them, who are assembling date and/or year sets of Morgans, bearing counterstamps. Any collector doing that might pay a modest premium for a piece like this. Then too, so might someone who has those initials in his name.

Welcome to the counterstamp thread, Fireball. While I'd never be one to turn my nose up at the more modern, novelty counterstamps like these Lincoln cents, I far prefer those from the 1800's that are telling of the the times back when. In a way, possibly the "smoking" Lincolns might be related to the issue of nicotine/tobacco and public awareness? If so, I've yet to see one with old Abe, puffing on a bong. The Kennedy counterstamp was part of a novelty item that drew parallels between Lincoln and Kennedy. For example, Abe reportedly had a secretary named Kennedy, whereas Kennedy had a secretary named Lincoln (apparently, not true). Googling "Lincoln, Kennedy, parallels" the many true coincidences are documented by Wikipedia .... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linco...urban_legend

Recently, I've been photographing my large cents for posting to the 117 Days of US coins thread: http://goccf.com/t/283922and I happened upon this 1833 cent with a counterstamp. It is simply the numbers 1 7 8 2 each punched in separately. Interestingly, the 1 is significantly doubled and the 8 (or is that a 3 maybe?) and 2 are slightly doubled. I know that in 1782, Robert Morris recommended to the US Congress that we have a mint. Maybe this is related? I don't have much hope of getting a better understanding about the reason for this counterstamp, but I figure if anyone might know, it will be you guys. Any ideas? [Edit: I just noticed that George Washington was born in 1732 AD, so maybe this is a bit of a tribute to him on what would be his 99th birthday?]

Sorry, Spence, I've not a clue on this maverick. George Washington was born in 1732, if that's the date.

Ahh well thanks for taking a look at it @exoguy. I knew there wasn't much chance of a better identification.
