Quote: Only counterstamped coins were allowed in the revolting provinces and everyone had to turn in 11 non-stamped coins to receive back 10 with counterstamps. There are lots of coins extant without counterstamps - was it legal to own non-counterstamped coins or were their owners taking a risk ?

thanks Pertinax and ExoGuy Quote: There are lots of coins extant without counterstamps The 1572-1573 counterstamps were only applicable to the silver and gold that circulated in the provinces of Holland and Zeeland. Together with the siege money (Alkmaar, Haarlem) this type of coins is characteristic of the early days of the second revolt which started with the capture of Den Briel (Brielle) by the sea beggars on April 1, 1572. http://www.wikiwand.com/en/Capture_of_BrielleIn the other 15 provinces of the Netherlands, the circulating coins were used unchanged. This is why a lot of the phililpsdaalders and bourgondische daalders from 1572 and before are indeed unstamped survivors. Interesting question about a penalty on the use of non-stamped coins in the revolting states. I do not know the answer, but believe the probable answer is yes, as using non-stamped coins in Holland and Zeeland in 1573 was tax evasion. Dr. Enno van Gelder, who was a great authority of the history of Dutch coins, has estimated that the taxation of 1572-1573 raised about a million guilders for the war effort, which was a lot of money in those days. There was one disadvantage, however: this taxation it could be effected only one time on the circulating currency. Therefore, perhaps, in 1575 a new type of taxation was put into effect. In the mint of Dordrecht, in the states of Holland, huge amounts of silver (with or without counterstamsp) were melted and converted into a new coin: the Leeuwendaalder (Lion Dollar). This well known coin has more than one detail in common with the first American Dollars: the leeuwendaalder would carry the symbols of the revolting states and no longer mention the name of the king against which the states had revolted. The taxation was made because the leeuwendaalder had the same face value (30 stuivers) as the daalder from the Spanish Netherlands, but cointained 10% less metal. In later decades the leeuwendaalder would conquer the field of an international currency, just like the American dollar, but that is another story.

Informative read there, 1c5d7n5m. It strikes me how we, as collectors, can be particularly drawn to coins from a particular era. For me, it's been largely mid-nineteenth century American merchant counterstamps and tokens, when the country was expanding, and there was much turmoil.

thanks ExoGuy Quote: It strikes me how we, as collectors, can be particularly drawn to coins from a particular era I share your view, and it is not the easiest way to build a large or complete collection: once the easy-to-get pieces in the puzzle have been found, purpose, patience and purse will be increasingly important; but the reward is greater when a new piece is found after a long effort of trial and error Quote: when the country was expanding, and there was much turmoil very interesting, this is something our areas of interest have in common for the Dutch revolt many issues of the extended and often deep turmoil can be traced back by the coins and jetons

Oh well. It was a nice try though. I'll just give up and leave it alone, as I don't want to mess up the surfaces by scraping it off.
