Peter - Humor me. Which one is the Cumberland Jack, is it the 1849 Farthing? Why is it worthless? Jack

That's an impressive token. The detail is remarkable. I looked at the bidding history and could tell you decided early on that it was going to be YOURS. It's really very attractive. Thanks for sharing it. Jack

Here is the difference between the original OBV design (left) and the mule (right) check the denticle area next to the rim.

Look carefully at the denticle design at the very edge of the coin. On the obverse examples the MULE has no denticles whereas the regular issue does. I know that there's a difference between the two, but I'm not sure why they make a mule version, unless it's just a much smaller population in order to create rarity for an inflated price. Kinda like "burnished" Silver Eagles. Jack

kena - Thanks for the reference. That explains very clearly about the die mix ups and the creation of the rarer Mule coins. Thanks to you we're smarter today than we were yesterday. Jack

I like the Brittania design coins... glad we will see her on our coinage again pretty soon... if I can fish one out of my change.

The Royal Mint normally does good work, but I wonder if anyone gets their knuckles rapped for mixing up dies... us collectors like it but it probably seems incompetent to management and not an advert for their quality control.

I agree with you DavidUK, the Brittania design just gets better and better. This current version is the best ever. As for the Mint and its employees, I suspect any punishment will be superficial in light of the collector interest (and profitability) for the Mule coin. It's just more money for them. They'll probably all get promoted . It wouldn't be much of a surprise if this "mistake" was months in the making. Jack

Hi everybody . I started collecting british coins about 2 years ago and this is my latest acquisition. It is a silver proof coin and I paid 80 pounds for it( only 9000 to be struck). Some say it isn t worth it but I think it s a good way for marking the Queen`s record. What do you think?

First things first - to CCF! I think you've made a GREAT purchase. Anytime history is documented/recorded, especially with such low mintage numbers, there is the potential for increased value, as time moves forward. Your friends who tell you it isn't worth it, are right, speaking only for themselves. If we (collectors) only purchased coins that our friends thought were "good investments", our collections would be very small.

When you make a purchase, you are evaluating it through your specific set of ideas, experience, likes, and dislikes, etc. For you, this purchase makes solid sense. Don't second guess your decision. It's a beautiful design and its silver content insures its future value. Besides, who doesn't love the Queen Mum? Jack
