Why not to keep it in the original RCM package, Dominic?
Official grading - this is excellent, in addition the slab has universal shape and could be displayed/stored everywhere.
But RCM package for PHS is beautiful, the coin presented in very nice way.

@Silveroid yeah, I think you are right... eventually, if I can find someone who is able to custom make a nice wood box, I would really like to put all those 6 coins and the 2 commemorative in one single box. I think it would definitely look much better than each one in their individual boxes...

But part of me would like to get them certified to know exactly if I indeed lucked out or got ripped off when I bought them... lol they are my first coins, so I'm not putting my hopes too high, but it would be nice to know if I actually made a good deal!

I have a 1914 $5 Premium Hand Select coin. The packaging is much better and presents well with the coin inside. I've thought about either selling the coin or having the coin graded it by NGC. You are right, it's a "crapshoot" when having a coin graded. I haven't seen any 1912, 1913, or 1914 $5 PHS on ebay or anywhere. I wonder what a 1914 $5 PHS would sell for today since more and more people are cracking open the case and having them graded.

i agree... the packaging is actually really nice... and I do think that if kept in its original package it may increase in value since most people are breaking them out to get graded.... I think it's too bad, because part of me see slabbed coin as coins that are in jail! lol it's just not as nice... but on the other hand, there is also something nice about knowing that you have a high quality coin that has been certified by professional... I guess there are pro and cons to everything!

It does seem like both PHS that I was talking about earlier have been sold. or at least I can't find them online anymore.

I sold a 1913 $10 PHS in the last Charles Moore auction and got completely hosed....if I knew it was going to realize such a low auction price, I would have given it my son. Same for the silver dollars I sold.....not sure if it was market timing, or if coin collecting is losing it's audience. I myself have begun bank note collecting and haven't bought a coin in over a year.

BTW, I have one RCM PHS box remaining if anyone would like one for their collection or to upgrade their HS box.

the 10$ PHS are not going for very much indeed... I have seen quite a few for much cheaper than what the mint sold them for. which kinda sucks, but I'm not getting rid of mine since I originally got it to leave it to my son when he grows up!

on another subject, I would love to get that box... but I am not sure if we are allowed to talk business in here... maybe because it's not an actual coin... but not sure... :-/ drop me a line.

Thanks a lot, Tripoli, for the box, that you sent me.
I didn't even consider to grade mine 1914 HS $5 coins, so your PHS box - this is the best upgrade for them to be displayed in it.

Appreciate!

Oh no, Dominic.

I had 2 1914 HS $5 coins, one of them I plan to give someday to my son, and the second one for my collection. Although black RCM cases somehow special (cause usually RCM packs coin to the maroon case), but I found them boring, and searched for the PHS case.
Fortunately, 4 months ago Tripoli offered me one of his, and I bought it. Being that period in some business travel, I do not remember, if I thanked Tripoli for this, and today's post reminded me this.

Yes, this case takes much more space, but it highlights the coin's presentation.

So, I really advise to get it from Tripoli.

yes its above the average budget to say the least..but it is the only ICCS MS 64 1914 5.00 gold BOC and the highest graded by ICCS which means that if they sent it to NGC or PCGS it might very well get a higher grade..The problem with the BOC coins is that you would have to get it cross graded in that case which isn't as useful as having an original certified coin...I think there is a reluctance to send these coins to ICCS because of the sealed foil factor ..once you remove the coin from the original RCM sealed holder it cant go back in. So most would rather take their chances with either PCGS or NGC.....ICCS is very difficult but if you get a top grade it is the most recognized for Canadian coins....I just convinced a seller to change his description on an ANACS MS 64 1914 5.00 because he thought he had the only one ..he wound up delisting his coin. There is a better picture emerging about the rarity of the key grades and dates of the release now that the smoke has almost cleared...

Anyone have info on how much a phs 1913 $10 with a grading of ms-63 by ICCS might be worth?
