A real hack job tooling the arrows off - numismatic value destroyed, and folks are still bidding on it?

Wow, 14 bids so far, up to $86.09 with 2 1/2 days still to go.

He is being honest about it. But too bad people don't see that or maybe understand it fully.

As long as the seller is honest it's a legitimate auction.

There's a good chance that the tooling was not done by the seller, and there's no reason why he shouldn't sell the coin as long as his not hiding the damage.

I disagree that the numismatic value is completely gone.

I would have been a buyer for ~25$.

86$ is way too high though .

I have added this coin to my watch list and will snip a picture of the "work"
done around the date. Makes a good educational example.
But, I fail to see the reason why the arrows would be removed. I cannot easily
find an example of a rayed 1853 without arrows.
Does it even exist?

Honesty is great, but how is it being interpreted?

Arrows removed could be interpreted as there were no arrows on it...ever!

...or...

The arrows were removed - no way to misinterpret that.

A play on words or lack of IMO.

BLadd,
Your explanation pleases me a lot.
You see, I have tutored English learners both locally in the past and currently on a Yahoo group.
The term "arrows removed" has two meanings as you mention:
One is numismatic jargon.
The other is standard English.

A shame to see such a nice coin damaged like this. That hack job should not fool even a novice collector.

I prefer arrows on my 1853.

But with the damage is it equal to the one from the original poster?

If I remember correctly there's an 1853-O with no arrows, but it has no rays around the eagle either. This isn't an O mint, and it has the rays, so it was crazy to remove the arrows. (just checked - only 3 known of the 1853-O with no arrows, no rays).

Well, perhaps there is a market for my even more rare 1853-O 'faux no arrows and rays'

I'm unsure why people are bidding that high--with obvious tooling/cleaning--numismatic value can't be above $50?

I think the arrows were removed after a relatively recent cleaning. For what purpose, I don't know, because even cleaned that was still a very nice example.

There was a fourth 1853-O no arrows/no rays found this summer, nice story: http://www.coinworld.com/articles/f...ays-50-surf/
