For 1/2 ounce O Canada set. Judging on the mintage and percentages of sets/singles sold, what would be the numbers of sets/singles ratio be?

The mintage should not be a purpose is you like the coin and if you're a collector... It's a non-sense to bypass a series just because the mintage is high... Seems that too much people want to make money with coins today just like investments... On my part, my advice is to look at coins who have 10K mintage or less, over this mark the only way to make money is too dump it at the start with little profit... There's somme exception, but overall I think it's a good measure...

Mintage is an important factor, but not the only one. People don't have tones of money so factors that will affect future potential for a positive return on our investment are important. Mintage and design are the most important in my opinion.

Take for example the 1812 ¼oz gold coin. Someone made a bullion version of this coin. The bullion version is 25% cheaper but which one would you buy. The proof finish coin with only 2000 made or the circulation finish coin with no case or certification?
The same applies to this set, I would rather have the 1oz set.

As for mintage of coins to sets, probably on the ratio of 25% to 50% sets to coins. I'm just making those numbers up but I think that's reasonable.

I'll be perfectly honest with you, the price for the 1/2oz series for $39.95 per piece is affordable and the price is guaranteed. However, with up to 40,000 pieces/sets, it's a huge amount. When I looked at the 1oz subscription, the price was slightly more than double of the 1/2oz coin/subscription. Yes the mintage of the 1oz is about 1/5 of the mintage of the 1/2oz. On a negative side, the price isn't guaranteed. On a positive note, it appears the box looks much better and the mintage again is much lower meaning it's more rarer and highly collectable to those people looking for something a lot less common if that makes sense.

What is a price guaranty?

For the 1/2 oz, if you subscribe to it, they guarantee that every coin they sell to you will be the same price $39.95. If you are not part of the subscription, the price of individual coins of the series may vary later on. Ex: the colour maple leaf at the end of the series will be around $50 I think?

@Dooby Rak
Like I said, if it's for investments you have to check the metrics... But for the pleasure of collecting coin for me the metrics are not a big deal... The 1/2 oz serie is a good afordable way for a collector to start and get initiated with numismatic... This set will only get value if the silver skyrocketed in the future, otherwise he can lose value if the market is overflow by seller in the future...

On the 1/2oz subscription the price will not change. If the price of silver goes up, the buyer will not pay more assuming they are buying a subscription. If the buyer buys individually, then the mint can raise the price. The 1oz series doesn't have a price guarantee.

@Mlalonde1977: I agree, for the starter, this is not a bad series as it a 12 coins theme. I think starter would find the $20 for $20 more attractive.

I have a friend who has young children. They wanted to get into coin collecting. I recommended the get the 1812 coins. In the case of circulation coins mintage is not important. They will make millions. His little girl loved looking through change trying to find coins for her collection. With the current value of the coins her investment is paying of big time.
Silver coins are investment grade. Yes we buy them for our collection but in reality they are an investment. Collectors moving into silver would probably not use these as a stepping stone, but rather the 20 for 20 coins as mentioned. In my opinion the 1/2oz silver series was not an attempt to attract new collectors, but just another silver product to sell. Some people will buy just because it is another coin offered by the mint. Some people may like the design. Form the viewpoint of average collectors I spoken too none could justify paying that much for a coin regardless of its metal content or future potential value.

what it does say monthly subscription, but I was almost positive I read somewhere that the coins ship every other month, does anyone else now for sure.? I also don't think the price will rise on these coins, the mint has a pretty good built-in cushion, on silver spot prices on this series.

first page of the 1 oz thread. The 1 oz is apparently bimonthly, 1/2 is monthly.
