@Silveroid Oh, I wasn't aware of this one! I love the 1989 ML proof versions, I have the Fractional 3-metal set, the whole 1oz set and a few of the silver ones. Even considering ordering the Gold ones (found it at 3,500$ somewhere), but it's still a lot of money.
Thanks, I gotta have this one!

Quote: .. You may as well, even if you can sell the other 2 for 10 dollars more each , thats a 20 dollar profit for clicking a few buttons Funny how our hobby has changed... before the digital age, only coin dealers would be heard speaking like that, on a bourse floor, and the collectors would speak in terms of the coins themselves. Now, everyone is a coin dealer (even if you don't think you are, you are, especially in Canada Revenue Agency's eyes...)

Hi guys, what do you think of the 5 oz Fine Silver Coin - 25th Anniversary of the Silver Maple Leaf Coin? Is it going to do the same with 5 oz penny?

@Silveroid: Proof is not the same as proof with gold plating. Nothing will beat the 89 straight up proof SML for class and finish save for another one just like it. The only coin, IMHO, that will definitely do well in the secondary market over the long run is the platinum coin and the glow in the dark. The RCM's addiction to subscriptions is just it's latest granny bait offering. I'd give it a year before being able to find the same coins in the subscription series without the al-cheapo composite wood/plastic box at discounted prices.

@stampking: Not unless the shopping channel Stateside decide to talk up this coin as well. IMO it's going to go the way of other 5oz silver coins from the RCM (penny excluded) - towards melt + a few %. The uninitiated bullion collector (not investor) might be lured by the 5oz weight. But the standard design on the 1oz and 10oz SML will always do better. The 10oz SML, by the way, can be had for $500-600 at the right places and comes better presented + a sterling silver stamped and serialized COA.

I doubt it because the mintage of 2500 is higher than the 1500 of the penny. It probably will sell out but I am not going to spend $500 for it. I am sure it will be widely available from the big dealers.

The SML has a higher mintage (2500 versus 1500) but it will have more worldwide appeal IMO. The Penny was extremely popular but I suspect most of that came from Canadians. SMLs in general are collected and valued worldwide. If I look just south of us, I see a huge market for the 5 oz SML anniversary coin. And across the pond, these will be very popular. I predict an early sell out. Edit to add: But note that the 1998 10 oz 10th anny coin and sterling COA can be had for $600-700

Quote: Where is the line? For starters, 30k in annual taxable sales. At that point you are required to register and collect/remit HST. The nice thing is that the switch to primarily .999 coins in the last few years will keep many flippers from reaching that point. But there are other tax implication when selling coins at a profit (capital gains). People who post that they have 100s of a particular coin or more than 50 of high $ sets where they are making 100% profits are going to attract attention - especially when they live in small towns and finding them would be easy, even for a CRA agent. Edit to add: Please note that I am not suggesting that anyone here is not accounting for their coin sale profits accurately or failing to pay any taxes due.
