Also, all of the Birds of Canada coins feature one bird not two as with the new Mallard coin.

I was thinking that too...but the Barn Swallow has four. (if you count the chicks in the nest)

If you take the duck coin and sell it with the bird coins the average person will think they are the same series. It's to close to call. I still see it my way.

I like the duck coin...it's nice the way the water drifts out across the coin...personally I think it's a stand alone release...I will fit it in with the 3 coin duck sub...

I would say the duck coins are a sub series to this bird series.

Koin Hunter, that's a great display of the birds .

There is no debate. The Mallard is not part of the Birds of Canada series. Just read the description on the website; it's pretty clear.

But, in my collection, it will be part of my personal 25 cent specimen finished 35mm coloured bird quarters.

Koin Hunter, you have the beautiful display of birds related coins!

In general, I against "painted" coins, but those...so alive.
Maybe will order one from this release, to put in a contrast with all my frosted creatures.

So anyone know if the new dragonfly and silver mallard coin are laser engraved or both painted? Last time I had a bad experience with two loons which paint came off from the edge.

@CanadianCoins1999, pm me your email and I will forward all releases to you.

I ordered the duck subscription and was told by the rep, that the subscription and individual duck coin will total 10,000. Is this correct?

When the 25 cent duck first came out I said I didn't think it was part of the bird series.

Based on what I've read, mostly here but elsewhere too, this Mallard pair is not part of the Birds of Canada series for all the reasons already outlined, plus the fact it's being issued at the same time as the robin. This would be a huge departure from the Mint's preceding schedule of one bird coin at a time. Although at least one person above was told by a Mint rep this Mallard pair is not part of any series, I suspect it may be the first in a DU series, unless the sales are disappointing. Having said that, I think most people will consider it to be like one of the series. I am confident they will be very appealing to the general collector--ducks are very colorful. I am planning to get one (along with the robin) when they go on sale to the hoi polloi. March 5th? Or 12th?

If the Mallard sells out its 17,500 mintage, I can see more coming as a new Ducks of Canada series.

How was the first Birds of Canada coin listed, did they mention it was first of series?
Either way I got one, better to pay issue and expect the price to increase then to take the wait-and-see-approach.

Ducks are birds, and will forever be grouped with the bird series coins regardless of what series they were intended to belong to. If you were to show a layman the bird series and throw in the duck coin they would not be able to pick out the one that does not belong. So regardless of what has been argued and what everyone believes to be true, this is a bird coin and will become part of the bird series. I don't think most people who buy this coin will care what series it belongs to, just that there is a bird picture and it fits perfectly with their other bird coins.

But is still not part of the bird series no matter how you put it.
