Hello, I'm new to coin roll hunting and I'm very confused as to what coins I should keep. I just went through a box of nickels but, I'm not sure which ones I should keep and which ones I should return. I kept coins from 1981 and older, should I keep these for nickel value and collector value or just return them. Also, what coins are th best to hunt for and what years to look for. Thanks!

Prairie Dawg, welcome to the community, hoarding the "Nickel" nickels is what some people do, however the value has dropped in half over the past year, they are now worth less than 5 cents each (metal content)

you should check out this website to give you some ideas of values http://www.coinsandcanada.com they list all the circulating coins and values.

as for nickels, I keep all of the 54 and older. I look for 1990 bare bellies, 1996 attached 6. I also pull out all of the US and have found some silver War Nickels (US nickels)

for your general question about what is better to search, this is a secondary question. first question you need to ask yourself is what are you searching for? Are you searching for silver, or are you searching for numismatics?

Either way, the only way to get good results is to do volume, with high turn over.

Good luck.

Just went through my first box of nickels the other day and found:

3-2000P

8-1996 low 6

About 280 pre-1982 (Just unsure about what to do with themrotect them,or not)

A fantastic condition 1939

And a handful of 1959-1963

Thought that was pretty good for my first CRH search! Thank you for the reply ace.

I'm very confused with the true value of the 2000p nickel, coinsandcanada says it's worth 5.30 in AU but my other resource said it was worth 20 cents?

Thoughts?

Wow, lucky finds! If you want to keep pre-1982 nickels for their metal content, put them in rolls and leave them in a dry, airtight place. Only leave the best one(s) for display. As for the 2000P nickel, I would think that 20 cents seems like a more reasonable price. They are not too uncommon to be worth $5.30.

Did 5 rolls of toonies to try and get some 2015s.

3 upgrades
0 2015
ughhhh...

I also asked for 20 rolls of nickels but the bank didn't have them, so I took the opportunity to order a box. I hope it's not MWR like last time.

That's a nice amount of pre 82.

I went to the bank yesterday and got twenty rolls only to find that they were already searched . To make matters worse I think they were ones I had returned earlier. I think I should start marking the rolls.

How do we get Canadian pennies now through roll searching? Is it worth looking thorough American rolls or how do you get them now since they're not in circulation? Any thoughts?

you will have to find a teller who is willing to sell you the penny rolls, they aren't supposed to release them once they come in. But they are out there, I and others still get them.

My own CRHing quest continues, to find as many US coins as possible for our driving trip over the border.. in 11 rolls of quarters - only 2 US.. in 5 rolls of dimes - 9 US coins, but one was a 1956 no mintmark silver dime! Happy dance.

The other part of the story isn't really from roll searching but begging, haha.. went to a BMO branch with a counting machine. The asst mgr looks out for odd and foreign coins for me, but had nothing. But she said she hadn't checked in a while, opens it up and finds the paper cup with rejects is full! Gives it to my greedy paws and I run home to find:
New Zealand: 2 dollars
Australia: 6.50 dollars
Mexico: 2 pesos
Germany: 5 old Deutchemarks
Euro: 2 Euros
Canada mangled but salvageable: 10.05 dollars(!)
UK: 5.01 pounds(!!)
and US: 3 Kennedy half dollars, one of them a 1964D 90% silver(!) These are my usable travel currencies..

Tradeable stuff - Guyana $1, China 5 jiao, Mexico old 100 pesos, Fiji $1, Thailand 10 baht, Cuba 10 centavos, Singapore 10 cents, and Canada dollar 81, and half dollars 77,71,84,02

A good day.

Only managed to snag 15 rolls of pennies at the banks today. The small cents definitely seem to be drying up and about half were US. Older Canadian finds were: 1938, 1940, 1945, 1947ML, and 1953. Also found a 1971 UK New Penny and a 1981 US cent with nice wood grain.

Fellow enthusiasts to the north; is this an impaired proof? I'm not overly familiar with you coinage, but this 2011 is rather mirror like and difficult to get a quick pic of.

Recent Canadian coinage has that mirror-like finish. I'm not sure what year they started but the mirror-like effect is more obvious in the newer plated steel coins.

Hi Slur. Thanks for the update. I wasn't going as far to call it a proof but the light abrasions atop a mirror field. So I was hung up whether or not it was an impaired proof or just how more modern Canadian coinage was minted. Thanks again.
