Maybe large sales will mean collectors will have the coins and not flippers and 2nd party resellers...

These will be more common than the regular 2012 W ASE which is the sleeper of the year with a mintage of 202k plus around 30k in the dollar set. Lowest W ever minted and right there with the sf set coins....

Collectors always have the coins. Large sales like that mean that the large sellers put in large day one orders.

basebal - I don't think that matters this time. I don't have several of the sets, and yeah I could have them if I wanted them at prices the 2nd party sellers are offering them. With this set, I think most people who want it will be able to or will have already gotten the set by the end of this offering - and the 2nd party resellers will have a lot of sets to sell at about the same price as they cost new from the mint. Either way - I have mine on order and don't have to hunt around for the best price.

First day's sales are 140,648.

There must have been some cancellations because the counter is now at 138,514 (as of 3:40 PM EST, 5/10/13).

The mint's new approach of 'mint to order' (since last year) is putting a damper on the 'instant' flipper approach that have infuriated the mass; which is a good thing for the common collectors (probably the best policy by the mint so far). This, however, will lead to slower appreciation in value of these set (as I've stated many time).

The large retailer always putting large orders in on the first day to secure their alotment.... they obviously know they can not instantly turn around and re-sale the set for 25% profit etc.... their main goal is to get the early delivery and will probably submit the majority of their order for slab to qualify for the FS/ER designation.

Last year SF set had caused a lot of headache for everyone, because of quality and delivery delay issues. Major big player was caught off guard when the result of MS/PF 70 turned out to be a lot lower. I think these big boys will be slower this time and will not try to pre-sale like before...... Anyone see any pre-sale PF70 coins for this set yet?

I actually think its the worst thing they could do. Without products appreciating everything becomes common and ordinary which turns people off from moderns and maybe collecting in general. The fastest way to get new people interested is to have something generate a ton of buzz every now and then like the 2011 sets

The US Mint product page says the last day total is 251,695. This is amazingly close to the 2012 last day sales total of 251,302. However, last year's final total ended up at 224,981 sets sold. I'm guessing that was due to speculators cancelling orders after the total got to a 1/4 million. It'll be interesting to see what this year's total ends up at.

TJ some was from canceled orders for resale, some from quality issues, but a lot was also because of how theyre doing it. What I mean is that the mint to demand with the late shipping dates put so many on the market they carried no premium. So a lot of people just bought it elsewhere when they came out for the same price instead of waiting a couple months to get it.

I expect fewer returns for this set though with the added quality of WP products

TJ also keep in mind that was yesterdays total - not the total including today. I think this year will have a much higher quality set - with more 70's. I also think that will hurt the 2nd party resellers - because many will see that they probably already have a set of perfect coins and don't need to buy a graded set.

The total posted today was for orders up until about 3 PM ET. The final order total that will post tomorrow will only include the last two hours or so. Last year, the final two hours accounted for 564 sets. I ordered two sets at 4:54 ET, bringing my total to 7 sets, same as last year.
