Just because I am a minimalist and like the same thing repeatedly (current JFK design), what about if it were: Silver business strike P mint mark Silver proof D mint mark Silver reverse proof S mint mark Silver matte proof w mint mark Or something similar? I know this is starting to beat a dead horse, I'm just really excited at the prospect of this 2014 special issue/set/commem, whatever. Or what about they do something similar to the rfk/JFK set... An unc and/or proof commemorative dollar, packaged with a new 50th anniversary half only issued with the set. Possibilities are infinite. Hopefully they choose something classy and deserving for the Kennedy half dollar.

From what I am seeing there it is simply going to be a special set of the normal issue coins with all the mint marks or the like. Quote: Sounds like another way for the US Mint to get more money out of collectors. Ummm, the point? I have said this before. OF COURSE it is something for them to make more money. They are NOT in the business of minting products for charity. I will be in on it regardless of composition or the like.

according to Louis Golino for Coin Week, these are the options being considered. Quote: The Mint is evaluating customer interest in a broad variety of special JFK half dollar set options.
The first option would be a 4-coin 90% silver set with each coin made as a reverse proof, and coins would be minted at the West Point, San Francisco, Philadelphia, and Denver mints. The coins would come in a special presentation case and include the booklet mentioned above.
The second possibility is a set with clad halves in proof minted at West Point, Philadelphia, and Denver, and one silver reverse proof coin plus the special case and booklet.
The third option is a three-coin set with a clad proof, clad reverse proof, and an uncirculated clad coin each bearing a mintmark for where they were minted, but no decisions have been made on which branch mint would issue the coins, and they would also include the booklet.
Fourth, a silver version of option three with a 90% silver proof, reverse proof, and uncirculated coins plus the booklet, and again no decision yet on where they would be minted.
The fifth possibility would be a two-coin set in clad with a clad proof and clad reverse proof coin with mintmarks to be determined later plus the booklet.
Finally, a silver two-coin set with a proof and reverse proof with mintmarks to be determined later and the booklet.
It is not clear at this point whether the sets would have limited mintages, or be issued to demand and sold during a limited window like the special silver eagles sets for 2012 and 2013. His stated preference was : Quote:My preference would be to issue both the 4-coin silver set and the 3-coin clad set, but to make the silver set limited to 100,000 sets, and to make the clad set to demand since more people would be able to afford the clad set, which should therefore have a higher mintage. In addition, if the regular clad half is also issued next year, for one-year only it should be put into circulation to stir up more interest in modern coins and in the Kennedy half series. I agree, but with a 250,000 limit on the silver set. Collecting should be inclusive, not exclusive.

I like his idea with the 100k mintage and having both a clad and silver set

Its too bad that they didn't come up with 4 designs for the Kennedy half dollar like the 2009 Lincoln Cent. That would have been very nice. But it is too late to do this now. Or is it? They don't have to release these in January. Given the popularity of the Kennedy halves, I would buy whatever option they go with. I love half dollars and wish they circulated more (I am doing my part). I am ok with the mint to demand, but it would be nice if they limited a silver set to 100,000. That would really stir up interest in the set.

perfesser - this is the mint looking to create the coin set. There hasn't been a new law passed to allow them to change the design of the half in anyway - so they are looking to do a new set with the existing design. Congress hasn't done anything to issue a set honoring Kennedy next year to the best of my recollection.

Wow...I guess some here do not remember the 4-5 hour fiasco that took place when the 2011 25th Annie ASE set was released...That was limited to 100k and the website immediately crashed and MANY collectors were shut out and mad...the Mint learned from this and installed the order counter and a one month order period This will be cheaper that that set and will be a bigger fiasco..but, if that's what everyone wants... go for it... Oh, and if you suggest limiting the sets to 5 or so per person that's what the 25th Annie set had but the dealers still got hundreds/thousands of the sets they wanted....

I highly doubt they ever limit dealer orders regardless of what they say. They get far to many sales from them.
But like has been discussed before the same people who complain about 100k dont order when the mintage is higher. You create the rarity everyone wants it, you mint to demand and large part of the excitement is gone.
If its 100k and I miss out itll just give me something to chase down and be that much more satisfying when I get it

Congress hasn't done anything to issue a set honoring Kennedy next year to the best of my recollection. Technically they don't have to pass any new legislation to change the designs. The Sec of the Treasury has that authority under the Coinage Act of 1890 because the Kennedy design has been in place for over 25 years. But they don't have the nerve to make that move on their own, and there really isn't the time to get legislation through. All of the set proposals made can be produced without having to get any outside permission. And while it has been mentioned that they wouldn't have to release them at the beginning of the year, if they delay them til late in the year would that also men delaying the Mint and proof sets until late in the year as well so they could have the new design coins as well?

My understanding is that these are just going to be stand alone sets not in mint or proof sets. If they put them in mint or proof sets as well theres no reason to pay even the smallest premium for the special set.

Bamablue, sign me up for tbe lemons and vodka. As fkr the Kennedy set, I could see it with a new reverse design, which the mint should have already planned on. The 50¢ piece will not perish, it only waits for us Americans to catch up with the rest of the world. Why not spark the interest with a new design? Tho I favor the return of Ben Franklin with a new design, and American Heros would do.

Quote: My understanding is that these are just going to be stand alone sets not in mint or proof sets Sorry my comment was based on an earlier suggestion that they would have time to change the designs because they could wait until late in the year to release them. My comment was to point out that if they did change the designs and waited until late in the year to release them in order to get the designs chosen and made, they would likely have to delay the proof and mint sets as well.
