I'm glad you were able to order one from the mint's waiting list, thehulk. You won't be sorry you did. I received my three coins today and they look spectacular. The detail is very precise on the galloping Bison, as well as on the prairie grasses in the foreground and the mountains in the background. These are amazing coins! I'm at a loss to understand why some folks don't like them. BTW @ Lostwords, who asked "am I the only one that can't find the eyes of the bison?" Buffalo are noted to have very small eyes, especially in comparison to their huge heads. They have very poor eyesight and rely on their senses of smell and hearing to know what's going on. I guess the Bison is the Mr. Magoo of the plains.

In what way are they "cheap looking"? They look great to me. The coins have have a lot of detail. The coins come in a clamshell, certifcate, and even a colorful glossy box.

The details are not up to typical proof coins standards; matte proof just doesn't have the same 'pop' as typical mirror proof. I also don't understand the omission of .9999 Ag markings. Nice coins but the design deserved a better execution IMO. However, with a mirrored proof finish, it would likely have been another $20FV and still cost $100. Despite that, I'm happy they are in my collection. Edit to added pics:

Thanks CC, I was pretty sure it was your opinion. BTW, I think your mixing me up with my cousin Bullwinkle, besides Rocky is tied up with Natasha right now and Boris is upset. Anyway Sherman and Mr. Peabody are both pleased that you like your Buffalo coins.

Dropped by the Vancouver boutique today and was told the bison is sold out. Forgot to ask if they will receive anymore or not. They still have the "chicken head" eagles. I have to admit they do look less like a chicken head in real life than from a picture.

By cheap I mean the finish is not as nice as I would expect for a $100 coin. I suspect people are setting low expectations due to the underwhelming, utilitarian finishes on the $20 for $20, and the transference of that expectation is inflating the assessments of this coin.
The face value has nothing to do with the quality of the coin, since the only way to appreciate it is to keep it. I doubt many will be bringing these to a bank. I like the coin, both what it represents, the design, but I was hoping for more for my $100. Consider the stunning Seven Years War and Grey Cup silver dollars, which both retailed for less.

I feel that the face value series is just an excuse for the Mint to produce lower quality coins but sell them at the same price as high quality coins. The only justification is the face value. Another classic barrier the Mint achieved.
A list of barriers achieved: Reducing mintages = increased prices Tax Free = increased prices Rising cost of silver = increased prices Lowering cost of silver = increased prices Increase in number of series = same prices, but more coins sold Face value coins ($20 for $20, $100 for $100) = lower quality coins at the same price $100 for $100 coin = $100 barrier broken for low quality 1oz coin.
I feel like every time the Mint made a paradigm shift, they used it to break a price/quality barrier.
