GR58 - the 2012 set has only 1 coin that is unique to it. That makes it less valuable to the collectors.

The mint has stated that these coins will be unique to this set - I believe in response to the outcry they got from last years fiasco of issuing the set and then issuing the Coin and Currency set with one of the ASE in it as well making the set less unique.

Here is a snippet of the press release for this set. Note the last line in bold - as they wrote it.

The 2013 American Eagle West Point Two-Coin Silver Set contains one silver "reverse" proof quality coin and one silver "enhanced" uncirculated quality coin. On the reverse proof coin, the mirror-like background finish of a traditional proof coin is applied to the design elements, achieving a magnificent contrast. On the obverse (heads side) of the enhanced uncirculated coin, the mountains, red stripes, and blue parts of the American flag; the year; and Liberty's sandals have an uncirculated finish. The remaining elements and lettering on the obverse have a heavy frosted finish. On its reverse (tails side), the ribbon in the eagle's beak, arrows, olive branch, alternating stripes in the shield, and the border around the shield have an uncirculated finish. The lettering and other design elements on the reverse have a heavy frosted finish. The fields on both sides of the coin have a new light frosted finish. All these enhancements - unique to this coin - add sharp definition to the designs. These two coins will only be available in this special set.

If I remember right the 2012 set started out as two unique coins, a reverse "S" mint proof and a regular proof "S" mint. After the two coin set was sold, the mint then offered the regular proof "S" mint proof in another set.

Now the 2006 set, is three coins with only one unique coin, the reverse proof. And it trades for over triple issue price.

When can we expect to know the final mintage

It will be months after the sales end. All the sets have to be shipped and returns/cancellations subtracted.

There will be a preliminary number next week but this may change dramatically when the dust settles...but it will be a maximum number anyway

Why is the 2012 set cheaper than the 2006 set, but has lower mintage. I know one is 2 coin and one 3 coin set .. but per coin price 2006 seems to be higher.

First year of issue coins command a higher premium ie 2006 reverse proof,2013 enhanced uncirculated serial number 1 ect !

And thats what ticked off a lot of people including myself. It would have been nice to have both unique but if theyd been upfront about it it is what it is.

Instead they chose to wait till the sales period was over and let everything think they were unique and like a week after that ended they announced the other set. As if that wasnt bad enough the other set had currency in it so they had to coordinate with another government agency and had known they were going that set for months and kept it hidden to try and milk the sales of the sets letting people believe they were unique.

The 2006 also started out as 2 unique coins. The 2006 burnished ASE wasn't announced until after the 2006 set had been sold.

You also need to keep in mind that whatever complaints there were about the 2012 set, the 2006 set was worse. There are lot fewer RP 70 from 2006 than 2011 or 2012. On top of all that, there are all those newer collectors who did not get a chance to buy the 2006 set. in a few years the same will be true for 2012 and 2013 sets.

I'll be just fine buying the mint released set. I am not a fan of the fad. I couldn't care less if the coins are sent to a grader as part of some marketing scheme. Unless they can show me that this actually means something - 10 years from now - who really cares - I know I don't and I've been collecting for quite some time now.

Agreed. The days of verying quality from the mint seem to be over as far as premiums. Now its basically a 70 or it isn't the quality is so good. In some ways the better quality makes it a little less fun since with old coins if you find a really nice one you can tell with the naked eye if you found a gem or not. With the new coins youve lost that aspect.

Does anyone know what sales figures were for last years set was with one day to go? I just checked the mint site the counter for the new set is at 2333K. I really thought there would have been more sold then that by now. I'm sure a bunch will be ordered today and tomorrow, but I guess there is a chance the mintage stays under 309k!

tkflex...lots of posts about the varying days and numbers for the set from last year. I think it is safe to say right now this set is about the same as last year. I expect a surge, but am kind of surprised at the low volume personally.

Hollywood - basebal... I see MCM is selling a 70 set both ER and traditional. The ER is going for $279 and the other for $259. If I was going to buy a set of 70's for my collection - I am saving $20.
