I recently acquired this Mercury dime and I have noticed what appears to be a one inside of the two in the 1942 date. Does anyone else see this or is it just me? I tried to take the best pictures I could using a loupe and camera. Any and all comments/thoughts are welcome. Thanks!

Need a better close up pic. Could be a genuine overdate. Could be a Chinese creation. Could be a die crack. Could be PMD. Can't tell from the pic posted.

I zoomed to 400%...agree with above. Cannot say for certain.

I supersized it as well and there is something going on, not clear enough though. It also appears there may be a slight doubling on the 4.

First reaction is no.
Top and bottom of one is missing from last digit, and there seem to be spot or a hit in between the top of 2. Of course, better pictures would tell it right away. I don't see the 4 having doubling either, more like it took a hit at the leg at the bottom.

The title says D, if so, then the 2/1 is far too clear.

I set my zoom level at 1,000% and found your coin does not have the repunched "4" and tip of the number "1" under the lower left of the "2" in the date that would confirm the overdate.
On a genuine 1942/1-D overdate the "D" mintmark is repunched to the south.

For what it's worth, this is the date after working on it. I did video editing for work and this is as clear as I could get it. There is some pixel disturbance beneath the date in your original image so it could not be cleared up more. I see the evidence beneath the number 2 but perhaps others could give you a better interpretation on authenticating.

I still do not see the repunched "4" and the lower tip of the number "1" located under the lower left side of the "2".
Did you check the "D" mintmark for evidence of it being repunched ?

Thanks for all the great information, I checked the "D" mintmark and it doesn't appear to be re-punched, however it is set lower than another 1942-D that I have. The 1942-D that I used for comparison the top of the "D" is touching a leaf and the 1942-D that is in question there is a gap between the leaf and the "D". I'll try for some better pictures.
