1916 D Because Of Die Rotation ? - Coin Community Forum

Silverman8585 New Member United States 11 Posts	Posted 01/11/2014 3:43 pm I purchased this at a coin shop with several other Mercs and I was wondering if it could be a D due to the die rotation that is prevalent in the 1916 D run. Is there any solution similar to Nic a Date that I can use? It is well worn and would grade Poor to Fair. Thanks guys! Report this Post to the Staff

kanga Pillar of the Community United States 5825 Posts	Posted 01/11/2014 4:26 pm To the best of my knowledge there is no product equivalent to "Nic a Date" for silver coins. And although the slight die rotation is a diagnostic for the '16-D that is not the only date/mm combo that has a die rotation. So unless there are other diagnostics think of your coin as a 1916 in Po-2. Report this Post to the Staff

I've looked at lot of 1916 p Mercury dimes and I haven't seen any with the die rotation. I checked the first several pages of 1916 D on ebay. I looked at the graded ones and almost all of them have the exact degree of rotation. I wonder if there is a study to determine how many 1916 D had that degree of rotation. I mean, it LOOKS like the correct die rotation for a 1916-d, but will that exclude every other 1916 die pairing of the two other mints? I don't know if there are any other die diagnostics that can tell if it's a denver mint or not Report this Post to the Staff
just carl Bedrock of the Community United States 20753 Posts	Posted 01/11/2014 6:21 pm A reverse rotated Mercury dime is common for almost all dates. I've got over 3,000 Mercury dimes and approxiamtely 25% have some reverse rotation. This is common with some coins and Mercury dimes is one of them. As to yours being a 16D? Not sure but I doubt there is any way to find that out. Report this Post to the Staff

I've been comparing it to graded 16 d Mercury dimes and I can faintly make out a D. I've been wanting a coin microscope for a while so I think now is the time to get one. If I eventually send it to a TPG would they use a microscope on it? Thanks for everyone's help! :) Report this Post to the Staff
