Regarding the Un Peso appearing at the end of the previous page, note the legend "Muera Huerta" ("Death to Heurta"), a reference to General Victoriano Huerta. Mocked as "The Usurper" and "The Jackal", Huerta was despised for having betrayed the first revoultionary President Francisco Madero's trust in him, seizing power for himself, and then having ordered Madero's murder.

Thank you for the background information. It makes the coin even more interesting.

A war officially starts when the first country declares war on the next. So it was not the death of the Archduke Ferdinand, it begins 28 July 1914 with Austria-Hungary's declaration of war with Serbia.
As for the end it officially ended November 11 1918 with Germany signing the armistice.
Good thread, some nice coins, I will try and did something out later when I get a chance.

That preceding Belgian 20 Francs is really impressive. The level of detail incorporated into the design is just astounding!

Here's another artifact of the Mexican Revolution, a 5 centavos copper issued by the State of Chihuahua.

From the junk box: here's another 10 kopeks. Strange shallow scratches on both sides - as if someone was checking if it was plated? I don't know if it was a problem at one point but it doesn't look accidental, nor is it your typical kind of intentional defacing or graffiti.

Not bad at all for something from the junk box.

Jbuck, it's from my box, as in: the box where I keep junk silver. I don't really remember where I bought it, though it's not inconceivable that it was in a junk bin... And since, rather surprisingly, it wasn't posted yet - a German half mark.

I think this one qualifies as they were part of the British Empire, therefore allies. Ceylon 1 Cent 1914 #107
