@ Tbone glad that I can add some info to help you expand your knowledge of gold. I may not be able to own some of the coins I've shared but I can certainly drool over them.

@Cherreepicker if you like that one, then you'll like the proof one I found for 1850

Note: The Mormons also struck $2.50, $5 and $20 denominations in 1849. Assays done at the US Mint proved the Mormon gold coins were underweight and debased.

Were they inspired by the Cap and Rays design in use at the time by mints in Mexico?

Notes about this $5: The initials on the beaver side are for the individuals responsible for producing these coins. Kilbourne, Macgruder, Taylor, Abernathy, Wilson, Rector, Campbell (a G was mistakenly used instead of a C) and Smith. A second engraving mistake occurs on the T.O. should read as O.T. (Oregon Territory). The $10 coin corrects these two mistakes and omits Abernathy and Wilson's initials as they didn't help purchase new equipment. These coins were heavier than the federal coinage since they weren't alloyed. They carried a premium and most were likely melted down and recoined.

@ The Silver Searcher

I wish, but no they are not. I will probably post a few of my own coins as we get to the 1860s though.

This is one of those coins that's not special. It's not rare or even a high grade. But it's a coin that fits this thread because it's one of the best of TrueView. It shows how any coin can be really great looking regardless of rarity or grade. And a TrueView image can really bring it out.
