How would one distinguish between original coins in cardboard holder and coins that might be replaced? I'm looking at a 1953 NSF set that has a hanging 3 cent. I'm guessing any error would be a replaced coin?

I'm comparing the 53 set with a 54 set. The 54 set has a shrink wrap film on it and the 53 set is in a thick clear flat bag. Should the coins look similar, with squared off rims and similar strikes?

Hi Coin Scavenger, this definitely is an issue for proof like sets from 1960 and earlier. These sets were packaged at the mint in cardboard holders, and wrapped in a thin cellophane wrapper. The problem was that the cello deteriorated quite quickly, and thus many coins in the cardboard holders that you see today have significant toning or spotting. Many people removed the coins from the cardboard holders over the years to safeguard from toning, or to sell the higher grade coins individually.

If the package is intact and has not been tampered with, all the coins will be proof-like strikes. Be careful, because some sets have been opened and some coins replaced with business strikes. The easiest way to tell in hand is to look for bag marks. Proof-like struck coins will have significantly fewer, or none compared to their circulation counterparts since these coins were carefully produced and packaged. Other ways to tell as you mentioned is to look for square rims, deep details and mirror finish.

I am not aware of the hanging 3 variety in the proof like strikes, so check carefully for proof like characteristics. Hope this helps!

P.S. here is an example of a genuine early proof-like set in it's original packaging: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Original-195...em4d28eefb82

I'm suspicious of the 53 set. The bag, I think was added after the thin plastic fail off or was removed. I did notice that C and C has a pl listing for the 53 hanging 3.

If you just remember this little hint you will stay out of trouble when you even THINK of spending big money on a 1953 Cardboard set. The 1954 -1960 sets in the cardboard and cellophane were officially sold through the numismatic department of the RCM and are superior coins known as Prooflike. The 1953 cardboard sets with the cellophane are NOT I repeat NOT prooflike sets. They are ordinary business strike coins taken out of bins and sold by the RCM as such. The original sales price was $2.00 plus postage. I have handled many of these 1953 sets over the years and have yet to see one with all six coins being PL. Most (not all) are No shoulder fold ordinary business strike coins. The odd time one or two will show PL characteristics. Usually a 1953 NSF 10 cents or a SF 25 cents. The coins typically grade as MS62- MS64 with the odd Gem 65 . DO NOT pay big money for these sets of 1953.

If I was giving prizes .................Jimmy you would win. That is exactly what I am saying. All of them are like this with very little difference. Clearly circulation strikes.

Am wondering HOW you guys can determine with such certainty which type of strike these coins are.

The photos are not the greatest, the focus is off, maybe because of the plastic they are photographed through, or maybe by purposely trying NOT to show the actual facts and details to a possible buyer.
It is relative easy to photograph these coins so each is sharp and detailed, despite the cellophane they are behind. I have done it.
This seller has the equipment and knowledge to do it.
