hello dave and ford perfect. I figured out how to set the camera finally. with what you member told I got it set. took some photos they are definetely improving. I was doing some research. I have a question for you dave its a quoate. adjustments with the shutter speed set at 1/400 (for fluorescent) or 1/100 (for halogen) and the ISO at 80.does this make any sense to you. I am just wondering. thank you

Are those number combinations which were suggested to you? The length of the exposure is about the amount of light, not the type. You can throw just as much light with a fluorescent as an incandescent, and that's what determines exposure. Setting ISO to 80 limits you. That's the "darkest" ISO setting, and it fixes problems you won't have. Any decent dSLR will let you use larger ISOs to 400 and maybe 800, which gives you a whole lot more flexibility with everything else.

While you're still in learning mode, there's no need to worry about all that. Use Aperture Priority Mode, so you only set ISO (might as well leave that at 400) and aperture (set that at f/8 and forget it). The camera chooses exposure.

Rocky,

If the Tamron 28/300 is to be purchased as a "primary lens" for Coin Photography then the $ spent, regardless of how good a deal it may appear will be wasted.

The standard 18/55 Canon kit lens can be made to extract images as good without spending any extra dollars.

This Tamron is a very capable long zoom lens but they call it a "Macro" lens in a relative sense. It will focus on a subject 20" from the lens at all zoom levels, which is pretty darn good for a long zoom lens but no good for coins.

Zoom lenses as a whole involve compromises that hinder their ability to shoot sharp macro. We do not recommend the use of zoom lenses for coin imaging unless that's all you have. I certainly wouldn't recommend the Tamron for coin photography - it costs more than some extremely high-quality dedicated Macro lenses and twice as much as the entire $400 system we recommend.

Worth the $800+ cost if you need that range of zoom for your photography. Worth $100 to a coin photographer, because as ford said it's no better with coins than the $100 18-55.

I should explain dave and ford. I saw this same tamron actually 3 of them selling on ebay for 5000.00 to 7000.00 dollars Canadian . I was offered one yesterday 250.00 Canadian it was still in the box. its prefect shape myself not knowing about lens was wondering why such a different. I was wondering if this lens is worth so much on ebay or is the guy selling the lens don't have a clue what is worth. I figured if I ask here some one will tell me the different. thank you all for your help.

C$250 is a terrific price for this lens, so good I'd expect it to be stolen for that price. Seriously. It's an $800 lens.

There are multiple generations of the lens, though. Only the newest generation carries the "Di" designation, meaning the lens is perfected for digital photography. Previous, non-Di versions are worth far less and that might be an appropriate price.

Either way, it's a great lens for a photographer but of no use to you for coins.

Rocky, I'm running out of ideas how to get through to you. I've stated the retain price of this lens in each of my last two posts, and I have no idea why this seller wants $6000+ for a lens that retails over $800 and may be bought at retail for $650.

And I have no idea why you're still looking at it.

This lens has been in production for decades and there are a number of generations of them out there in all price categories. They are not equal.

True that; I just didn't want rocky basing a value estimate off what you paid because yours may be a lesser lens.

Want to have some fun, rmc? Try using yours on coins. Your skills are at the point where it might be an amusing side project for you, and it'll sharpen your skills. With such a short focusing distance (relatively speaking), you might be able to make something of it.
