While my father and I worked on some Whitman cent and nickel folders when I was young, I gave up on it by high school.
But, when I realized they had made a change on the reverse of the cent in 2009, it shocked me so much that I had to get more of those!
In the process of geting more of those, I discovered all the other types of coins and got the fever pretty bad, and still going.

This subject has come up before. Mine was a 40% silver JFK half dollar a friend of my father gave me, and no I don't have it anymore. John1

It all started when I went to my friend Steve's house one day. He showed me two old Whitman folders his grandparents gave him. One was Washington quarters, and the other was Mercury dimes. I was so fascinated that every time I went to his house I had to look at them. From there I started going into town with my mother for groceries. She would stop at the bank so I could buy some rolls of nickels. Shortly after that, my parents bought me a Red Book for my 10th birthday. I was so obsessed with that book I would bring it to school! Then, a couple of weeks after my birthday, while going through some rolls of nickels, I found the coin that got me hooked...a 1943/2 Jefferson War Nickel.

A 1937 Mercury dime I got in change around 1970. I still have the dime.

The topic is 'What coin/coins...' but many have replied naming a relative who was instrumental in their starting to collect. From time to time my dad withdrew to the bedroom, opened up a wooden chest and took out several coin folders. I pestered him for a look. He reluctantly allowed me to share in his hobby. Back when Whitman Folders were widely available in many stores for $0.35 I started with the cents and nickels. But my love of Barbers began when he gave me some duplicates. Worn slick, I was fascinated by how old they were. And of course none were still in circulation in the area. The rest is history.

My 1883-O Morgan. No question about it, as a little tyke I was given this silver dollar by my aunt who found out I was learning about coins with my dad and grandfather. She happened to work at a bank (back in the day) and brought one home for me. Now mind you that was 46 years ago and I still hold that coin near and dear to me. Just so you can see, here it is in all it's glory... Certainly not a high value coin but one that has more emotional attachment to me than any other. My aunt passed away about 30 years ago and this coin always brings back the memories. Thanks for looking...

Grandfather gave me his old cents and a few mercs. Not much really but the Flying Eagle cents I received sparked an interest. I took about 10 years off from the time I was 10 til I was 20. I've been back into collecting and love it since then, even if it's only a little over a year.

Like others have mentioned it was wheat pennies my mother and I would look for during our churches VBS. The kids would have penny offerings and my mother and I were the bankers. We would find wheat pennies, Canadian pennies (RIP), and even a proof once.

Great stories. Sometimes hearing about the special place a coin or the memory of the relative who started us puts the whole thing into perspective. Thank you everyone who has shared! And keep them coming!

As a little kid I started accumulating Liberty Walkers. Then my cousin stole them I think. But that got me started wanting to have that coin.

I'd have to say bullion got me started... when I didn't have enough $ for bars or rounds (or the LCS was out or not selling) I'd buy a buck or two in coinage. Love the Mercury dime design, and I really had no idea about the Standing Liberty's until I spotted one in the bin. That got me looking into more and older coinage, and now I'd say I'm a Barber fanatic. After that I found 3 cent silvers and when I can afford to I buy one of those. I don't really have anything MS or graded, yet.
