I was reading on another forum about a year variety on the 1939 Jefferson nickels. The 1938 years has the weaker steps. During the year 1939 they came out with the new design with the stronger steps with an edge on the ends of the steps. Well they call that reverse die "Reverse of 1940." I wondered if any had heard of this before? The ones that are collectable are the 1939 with the reverse of 1938. How do you tell the difference? Here is what to look for.

I think this will be a tough one to find and verify due to wear and the possibility of a weak strike.

Edit: Thanks for the info, I learned something new today.

Hi Coop. I do look for this variety but to your point (and Neo's) unless a high grade specimen this seems to be a tougher authentication. I don't recall the added value of this variety but Strike It Rich has an established figure. And if I'm not mistaken there may be a following year variant. Fuzzy on that detail though.

The dozens of CRH specimens I have are way too worn.

It was new to me. I'm still working on the subject of 1971-6 P & D nickels with different RDV's I've found the common one, just not the next one.

The only thing is coop rereading your post you mention the weak steps is the collectible one but 'strike it rich' seems to say the enhanced steps are the ones that carry the premium-I'll look again but pretty sure...any idea?

Here are several on ebay:

It is not the weakness of the steps on a coin, but the weakness for the design for the series on the 1938. The new design for 1939 had the stronger steps, but not all were struck with this reverse. The ones with the 1938 reverse are more collectable. (weak steps design)
