I've included some backstory here, but you can of course scroll down right to the coins!!
This is a thread to go along with my "Silver Keepers" one (
https://goccf.com/t/230422) ...I've been sharing these coins individually on the grading subforum, but thought I'd share them together in one thread.
With the help of CCF, I've been working through a collection
inherited from my father, and at the request of family, selling many of the coins. I've narrowed down the collection of keepers to 6 silver coins and the 11 gold coins presented here. In deciding what to keep, I tried to figure out what my father liked the most and how he strategized his collecting. I remember him showing his collection to me with pride when I was younger, but I don't think we ever discussed how he chose which coins to collect. In reviewing his collection now, it seemed that one of his favorite coins (and my own) was the
Morgan silver dollar, so I decided to keep a few of the nicest examples of those. With his gold coins, it looked as if he was collecting a type set from the mid-1800s to 1930s. My plan which developed through this process has been to keep a type set of his nicest examples, selling off any duplicates. I am hoping that what remains will be kept in the family and handed down, but it is all graded and ready to sell if that becomes necessary. What I started with as a bag of 80+ unslabbed coins and two boxes, is now a nice 17 coin collection, slabbed and in a neat NGC box. I haven't showed off the coins to the family yet, but I am hoping they will appreciate the collection and my work and be happy with my plan to keep the coins. For now they will be safely returned to the bank, but I have much more knowledge about the coins (since I had absolutely none at the start of this project) and detailed pictures to enjoy whenever I'd like.
Let's get to the coins! As you can see, it's ALMOST a complete 12-coin gold type set. We are missing a $3 gold coin...hopefully I can add one to the collection at some point, although that will involve convincing my wife it's a good idea.
Anyway, here are the coins:
