I did not do the same PP on the shots. I'll do a couple more without PP.

First shot is with 2" tube-no PP. The second is without tube-no PP. Sorry for my misunderstanding.

Ham...it's odd that the images are different sizes, but I still think this comparison serves the purpose of seeing the effect of the tube. You can clearly see that a lot of light is hitting the coin from side angles. Not sure where it is coming from, but it's possibly from reflections off the slab itself. It could be coming from your lighting setup, or from other lights in the room. This extra light is lighting up the edges of the coin, and the peripheral devices, in an unnatural way. It is also lighting up the prongs that hold the coin in place, making them much more obvious. The shot with the tube has higher contrast, with all the unnatural side lighting eliminated, and the prongs are dark and almost impossible to see! I'm very impressed with the differences this makes, and plan to try it on a few slabbed coins to see if it can be a general practice to keep side lighting away from the coin. Nice work...Ray

I shot these in a total dark room (early in the am. before the sun came up). The only other light source would be my computer monitor, which is a good 3 feet away and not pointed in the setups direction. Must be off the slab? I have some black PVC that can be cut to any length I want. Any suggestions-shorter than 2" or longer than 2"? As I recall 4" was too long. Again, thanks for the input Ray.

Thought I might take a photo of my setup. Might help explain something.

If the room was dark, it must be the slab itself that is re-directing some light to the edges of the coin. Not a good thing at all! I think you've discovered something very interesting in this thread, Ham. All the experiments I've done with tubes gave me no advantage, but I was shooting raw coins. Maybe there is a big advantage blocking the light for slabbed coins.

I'm going to cut lengths of PVC 2 1/2", 3", and 3 1/2" (flat black primer the inside), and see what happens. The length shown in the setup is 2".

ham happy new year. I like your setup. you got some great gear there. I have been watching ebay for quite some time, for a device. well I purchased it this evening. it should be here in 3 weeks. I think it will be the answer to my problems with silver and nickel. you have a great one and again happy new year

For this shot, I used a 2 1/2" PVC tube. What are your thoughts, Ray and others. Different coin.
