I'm tempted by a sovereigns sale but I'm not sure if it's that great a deal right now. If a coin has almost $200 in gold and it's markup is 10%(about $20), it sounds decent to me. Do these ever seem to go for cheaper? I saw the current deal which ends tomorrow at Penn Metals.

Most of the sovereigns I see for sale are at least 25% above spot, though that's for bag-marked uncirculated predecimal sovereigns.
Modern or extremely worn predecimal sovereigns may go for cheaper but I'm not sure.

Common date Australian sovereigns in AU 55-58 can be had for about 15%-25% above spot gold value; EF 40 for common dates for spot value only.
Young Head Australian sovereigns in EF40 for about 10%-25% above spot value, for the more common date and MM combinations.

The operating mints at the time in Australia were Sydney (S) and Melbourne(M).
Rest in Peace

I looked at the Penn offering too, and for those $200-$300 world coins the 9 different that they offer are very reasonably priced. Keep in mind that they probably will not be uncirculated and may have abrasions on bag marks. Most of what you are paying is for the gold, so the coin itself may not be super duper as far as grade.

But having a neat old gold coin in your had for that price range is certainly fun. The Numismatist had an article on this subject in the last issue that you might want to read.
