Hi. This is my first post here. I have a question about grading. Lets say you have 2 coins, same year and mint mark and in identical condition. Except one has gorgeous toning and one has no toning. Would the toned coin get a slightly higher grade because of the toning? Or does that not factor into the grading? Specifically at PCGS if it matters. Thanks!

Toning plays no part in the grade other than sometimes it can cover imperfections and raise the grade. I have seen toned coins under-graded many times too. Depends on the nature of the toning, but I've seen it go either way. In theory though, the grade of each coin should be the same.

Toning and eye appeal actually does play a role, especially at PCGS. They have a fairly extensive explaination here: http://www.PCGS.com/eyeappeal/

I have seen some that I would consider low MS grade classic coins graded MS66 that were darkly toned overall and in my opinion were maybe 62 at best but the toning hid the flaws.

Other coins with rainbow rim toning seem to get a + or *.

"Eye Appeal" is one of the factors that affects numerical grades at grading services and definitely impacts sale price, especially at auctions. In the situation you describe the "gorgeous toning" would possibly nudge the grading upward by a point or two compared to the untoned coin.

Morgan dollars provide a dramatic example of the value that attractive toning can add. Truly spectacular toning on otherwise common date Morgans can result in auction prices hitting ten or even twenty times the price that one might expect for an ordinary brilliant example.

Thanks everyone for the input. Jaobler, does what you say hold true with Mercury dimes?

Most of the older Silver coins 70 yrs plus should have some toning present otherwise I suspect them of having the odd dip or two.

Glad to hear it *shouldn't* affect grade, I think most all toning is ugly. Especially since I overheard LCS talking about ways to help tone artificially.

to CCF. Toning can be a factor in the grade of a coin. Most common case if a coin has very attractive original tone from storage it may result in a * designation from NGC. I do collect Morgan dollars if they have attractive obverse toning only (just my preference) but do not have the budget for what is referred to as Monster toning. I haven't posted a link to this website in a while so now seems like a good time. Lots of good information for people wanting to purchase toned Morgans and some information relevant to other issues. http://www.jhonecash.com/coins/tonedmorgans.asp
