Its a very very cool idea I love it-leave the map in the will for the executor to hand out to whom you choose to have it

That is pretty much what I have in mind.

Leave clues to each grandchild, so they will have to work
together to find the treasure. Make the treasure good enough
to make it worth it. Make it hard to find, so they will have
to work for it, and can't be found with out clues.

Well, got a start on my son's treasure chest. Built the box, gotta get some hinges and a latch, and stain it... Planning to fill it with ASE's...

Keep us updated on your progress.

I am having a lot of fun filling mine.

I have some ideas bouncing around in my head for a
new chest. Some time in the future I hope to move
closer to where my brother lives. He is very good
at welding. I think I would like to have one made
out of Steel and oak. I am sure I will have a few
different ones before I get one I really like.

Will post pics of the progress, hoping I can make it look old, gotta find the right stain and "old-timey" hinges for it...

Edit to add:
I really like the idea of the treasure map, I may use a variation of that...

NOW you're talkin'! I like the way that wood took the stain.

This thread started me on a wild goose chase trying to find a larger box around the house for my silver stash. I have been using a small, carved wooden jewelry box that doesn't fit everything.. and things are getting disorganized.

I just want something portable, compact, sturdy, and lightweight to toss everything into, including rolls of eagles. I think I have all the materials in the basement to throw one together, so... thanks for the inspiration, GR58 and SomethingIsFishy!

In other news, all this talk of *Pirates* and *Silver* made me finally photograph a recent acquisition...

mamastinky Good to hear the treasure chest adventure.

Finding the right box is really a challenge, The box I am
using is getting close to being full. I think it is approaching
120oz ASW of silver.

Last week I was going through a Jewelry box full of jewelry.
I will make a offer this coming week and hope I can get
the box. It is a little bigger and nicer than the one I am using.

I do have a idea of what I really want to build. But I want
to wait until I move closer to my older brothers, sometime in
the next couple years.

I want it to be a mix of steel and oak. My brothers both have
skills that will help me build what I want.

I am thinking a box that is stackable and will hold between
400 to 500 ounces will be about right.

I am very interested in seeing yours .. or anyone's box/chest
Please post pictures

Forgot to say, nice pirate coin I like those.
I have one in my chest, but do have 5 others.

Started-My-Mini-Treasure-Chest-Today

When I get a bigger chest I am thinking I will put them all in.

Here is the most current picture I have of my box.

Started-My-Mini-Treasure-Chest-Today

I did put a few more ounces this week. But was a slow week
for coins ... for some reason I felt the need to buy a AR 15
this week ...

I guess it has something to do with I don't like being told
what I should or shouldn't do ...

It might end up like the AK47 I bought in 1994 .. and never shoot.

Nice!

Just for reference I used minwax "early American 230" stain and clear gloss polyurethane on my box...

Another idea - for a finish similar to what you see on a gun stock, you can use tung oil. I love it. To me it looks better on harder wood, though.

Well, I have come to a fork in the road.

Started-My-Mini-Treasure-Chest-Today

Went looking for hinges and found this! My plan is to use the box I made for my son's ASE's, and fill this box with "junk" silver. I think dimes would be a good size...
