The scale is in cm. It weighs about 1/2 a gram. I was told that it was from around 1125 AD.

Is there enough left to narrow it down to a specific coin? I can try different lighting methods to try to get what is there to show a little better...

Thanks in advance for all your help!

I moved your thread over to the Ancient/Medieval section, we have one or two experts on Medieval coins there that should be able to help.

Well, while we are waiting for those experts to help, here are a few of my thoughts:

1. It seems like the right size and weight for a denier of early (i.e. dark ages) France.
2. The cross pattee with the dots between the arms looks very French and certainly could be Lorraine. I'm especially focused on the slight invagination at the end of each arm in the cross.
3. Personally though, I find the coins of Lorraine (French) or Lothringen (German) confusing because this territory jumps back and forth over the years and so neither my French nor my German numismatic books cover the coinage from here well.
4. I cannot discern any detail of the coin from the second pic. I've tried rotating it around, but I just can't pick out any of the usual sorts of designs elements.

Yikes that is a lot of pressure! I'm thinking "student" of medieval numismatics is more accurate than "expert".

echizento, Thanks for moving my post to a better place

Spence, thank you for your input. I'll try to get better pictures in case there is anything helpful on the coin.
I hope it can be identified as from Lorraine - I don't have anything from there in my collection yet.

Here are a couple more photos with different lighting. Does it help at all?
Thanks!

I've been informed that my coin is likely to be this one:

@spott, yes you could be correct. I still am having difficulty reconciling the rev details on your coin with the over at CGBFR. maybe the three columns that make up the building (a cathedral perhaps) are the two and a half linear structures at the center of your coin? If so, then the building should have a cross at the top, which would make sense if this is a cathedral, but then the CGBFR coin is missing that detail. Still inconclusive in my mind, but this attribution is as good as any. Sorry to not be more helpful.
