I started discussion on this in the circulation finds thread but it was cluttering things up there so I started a new thread here.

ace_ftw - this is about as close and clear as I could get it...I took the photo through a hand held magnifying glass which I didn't have centered exactly so that's why the outer edge looks goofy fom 8-11 o'clock...

I'm going to have to be a downer.

To me, this looks like it was post-minting damage, and here's why;
If this was a goobered blank planchette, the "C" shouldn't be there - it appears to me as though this is some sort of a cavity that has been formed on the coin face, right at the begining of "Canada";
It appears to me as though the "C" in "Canada" is below the blank field;
If the coin had a cavity there,before it was struck, and the "C" in Canada is indeed below the blank field, the "C" should not be present, as the die should have not made contact with the planchette in that spot.

I would hazzard a guess that this quarter was subject to some sort of acid...?

unruhjonny - I don't think it was a goobered blank planchet, but an error that was formed in the coining chamber.

Looks like an authentic struck-through grease (dirty greasy metal-dust gunk) error to me.

Actually the original pattern can still partly roughly shown, like the 'C', is pretty normal in strike-through.

Thank you all for your responses...it is appreciated. I'll assume it's a struck through and keep it safe till I figure out what to do with it. I'm a very casual collector of Canadian coins and everything I've got came via pocket change and periodic roll hunt binges :) Assuming it's a strike through anyone want to hazard a guess as to it's value? I've got some other oddities (for lack of better words) I've accumulated over the years and I'll put up some pics and see what you all think.

that quarter looks intresting, I have question has any one check for varities in2012 pennies. like something like a pedalstal under the first 2 in 2012, and some doubling on mag cents and lots of doubling of date and Canada on non mag cents. Another thing is mag cents that have in different spots of black mag cents. They look like rust spots all these cents came from clear plastic rolls I pick up from a store they never have been in circulation I have trouble supply some photos of these.
