Really. My grandpa lived in BA. I wonder if he was there. Probably was. Small world lol.

Just got mine in the mail today. I always order two -- one for myself and one as a gift for my nephew (my son gets a yearly silver mint set). It looks like, well, every other proof ASE I've ever received, except for the edge lettering (which isn't visible unless you take it out of the OGP and even then isn't really clear unless you remove it from the capsule). The COA does mention that it is a 30th Anniversary edition, so that's nice. I'm just glad I didn't have to pay extra for this year's issue, although I do wish the wait hadn't been so long.

Generally speaking, ASE proofs are released in January, with this 2016 edition finally being released in September. I am hoping the Mint will not extend the sale of the 30th anniversary ASE too far into 2017. I am curious if the Mint will be releasing the 2017 ASE proof in January or delay it later into the year.

Nice pic barryg, esp of the edge lettering. It actually looks nice once you're able to see it. Hopefully someone will experiment with other capsules that will let you see the it more clearly and post of pic of it.
Wonder if it's possible to give the edge lettering a proof finish as well. Give it a bit more pop.

I started buying these back in 2012 for my nephew who has a birthday in February, and every year I've been able to give it to him on his actual birthday. This year I had to give him an I.O.U. and I certainly hope I can go back to giving it to him on schedule next year.

That (the normal January release of the Proof ASEs) is what really bothered me about the decision to not produce them in 2009 (and the uncirculated version in 2009 & 2010) because the mint claimed that demand for bullion was so high in 2009 that they were prohibited from making numismatic versions. The 2008 Proof ASE was released for ordering in December of 2007! I ordered my 2008 proof ASE on December 27, 2007 and it shipped out on January 6, 2008. The mint should already have minted a large number of 2009 proof ASEs in late 2008, before the demand for the bullion coins even kicked in. The decision not to produce them in those years has never made sense to me and I read the law they referenced and couldn't find any clause that mentioned any such prohibition. Last year saw a record number of bullion ASEs sold at 47 million coins (and January was the highest month with over 5.5 million coins sold) yet they were able to ship my 5 proof coins out on January 02, 2015, the same day I ordered them (actually a subscription order). The uncirculated version followed in March. This year demand for bullion is already running 5 million coins behind last year so tooling and testing the edge lettering setup is the only reason they might have for the delay. Hopefully they will get back on track next year. Of course to do that they have to start minting the 2017 ASE proof coins pretty soon, probably in parallel with the last of the 2016 coins. I have at least one of every numismatic ASE minted since 2000 and really miss those 3 that didn't get made.

(My apologies if this has been asked before - I did a couple of searches, but I could have missed it.)Why are these selling for $60 and up on eBay when you can purchase them from the US Mint for $53.95?

Seems like a valid question... I think some people who do more business on ebay have money "locked-up" in ebay where it's easier to spend.... perhaps they'd be the buyers right now...

One reason is because people simply aren't aware they can purchase directly from the mint, but yeah, it's a for sure.

Today I received My order of three, ASE'S One was flawless, the other were upside down and banged up, like they were someone's returns..... As per the mint's policies, all three go back and I can only hope that the re-shipped ones are all flawless...... Ps, The Uncirculated Mint sets too were also a scratch fest of trouble, all going back...... Barryg, Sweet pictures....

You only have to return the parts of the order that have issues. Done it many times....

What do you mean by upside down? Isn't the capsule the same all the way around?
As far as being banged up is it possible it was caused during shipping? I know I'm new to this but just figured the us mint would have better quality control.

What the mint means when they say you have to return the entire product is that you can't return a single coin that was in a group package, like one coin out of an annual proof set or just the coin from a coin & currency set. One proof ASE is an entire product. You don't have to return the entire order. I assume what you mean by upside down is that the reverse was visible when you first opened the box. Is that right? I have never returned an item to the mint, but I have had to have lost & unsent products re-sent and I know that the mint does not charge any shipping on those. If you call them and explain what you got and ask them how to ship the damaged coin, ask them if they will also refund your cost to return the coin. They just might. Here is the first image of my ASEs that were delivered two hours ago. My micrometer measures 3.594 inches, slightly under size but it weighs 31.28 grams, slightly overweight. I have to dig up my ASE album to see if if fits snug and will post again with that result. Edit: The edge lettering picture was taken with the coin standing on edge by itself. It is very well balanced. You can see the collar joint lines on both sides of the lettering.
